Generic Scope

Department Custom Scope
The Assistant Vice Provost for International Affairs (AVPIA) is responsible for implementing international strategy initiatives and developing effective collaborations with campus partners in line with the internationalization vision of the Vice Provost (VP) for International Affairs and the University. The AVPIA works closely with the VP as well as directors of units in the International Affairs (IA) to ensure alignment between IA activities and University goals, provides administrative oversight and guidance for IA reporting units including International Students and Scholars (ISS) and Education Abroad and the central business and communications units in IA. Oversees international education outreach and evaluation and oversees the development of international partnership agreements. Assists the VP in providing functional alignment and support to the UCR overseas Strategic Partners, University Extension and the Area Studies initiative. As directed by the Vice Provost, the AVPIA of International Initiatives will provide university-wide leadership for University of California Riverside's international activities, develop a strategic vision, and coordinate with academic and service units in order to execute activities in line with the university international agenda. In this key role, the AVPIA will provide visionary leadership to advance the existing international educational programs and initiatives, coordinate and support international agreements between UCR faculty, colleges, schools and other international institutions, and develop innovative new plans for international programs and activities. The AVPIA will also work with other units to enhance international recruitment efforts; and based on curriculum alignment, seek collaborations with other global educational institutions in order to develop research and learning opportunities for both faculty and students abroad. Lastly, in collaboration with International Affairs communications manager, the AVPIA will work to enhance the University's global brand through education activities that help prepare students to thrive in a global environment. The successful candidate will be significantly involved in all international student's recruitment and admission efforts; collaborate with other University offices to assist with visa and immigration issues; work closely with education abroad units as well as with academic units in the University to enhance UCR's presence as a global brand.

  • Coordinates with various units on campus on international related activities, including Research and Economic Development, Student Affairs, the Graduate Division, University Extension, Undergraduate Education, University Advancement as well as initiatives. Assist the Vice Provost to represent UCR Internationally, accompany campus administrators, deans, faculty, and students on key international trips as needed, and facilitates the Vice Provost's international engagements and collaborations.

Facilitates the development of formalized Memoranda of Agreement and coordinates the visit of international delegations to University of California, Riverside. Assist the Vice Provost to lead formal agreements with international institutions to enhance collaborative instruction, scholarship, and research for faculty and students. Facilitate outcomes of individual faculty initiatives, and initiate agreements to help build a strong alliance and collaborative spirit among UCR and its academic departments with universities and other learning institutions in UCR's strategic and preferred regions of the world.

Seek and secure extramural grants to support faculty research on international themes and scholarships for students to study abroad either as part of a group or independently, or to conduct research or pursue internships in other parts of the world. Administers grants for graduate students and faculty to travel for specific research, study opportunities, or dissertation research in modern languages and specific area studies that must be conducted in another country.

Actively participate in strategic planning for international student recruitment and admission strategies for the university. Liaise with a team of international recruiters and back-office support staff to formulate recruitment annual business plan and actively participates in travel and international student recruitment work. Sets clear annual students recruitment targets in coordination with the Colleges and Schools, and in collaboration with the Office of the Registrar and the Office of Undergraduate Admissions. In collaboration with Student Life, guide and coach staff on student recruitment matters and promotional activities. Cultivates and maintain relationships with international high schools and colleges, domestic high schools, community colleges and language schools that enroll international students, and work within approved guidelines to regularly help increase international student recruitment. Work with Student Life to develop and/or review marketing and administrative materials, including: applications, promotional brochures, web-site, e-communication, prospect-admitted student materials and communications needed to support recruitment strategies. Participates in reviewing applications for international undergraduate applications for admission purposes; and evaluate foreign credential to make recommendations on admission decisions.
