Department Custom Scope
This position requires knowledge and experience in electrical engineering to ensure laboratory safety, maintain instructional laboratory inventory and equipment, advise on upgrades and advise students and faculty on educational or research electrical engineering projects. The position demands organizational and technical expertise to support the department mission of producing high quality Electrical Engineering (EE) and Computer Engineering (CEN) graduates. The incumbent is expected to successfully coordinate various projects from conception to completion and implement continuous service as required by providing a full range of engineering technical services. Incumbent will provide sales and service enterprise activity support as required; maintains relevant information related to labs, cleanroom and equipment usage; responsible for security of facilities within span of control; assists with planning for ABET accreditation functions, provides input and data for department budget and planning; research support and systems/facilities operation. Serves as technical liaison and represents the College of Engineering at events and meetings including, safety inspections, student workshops and maintenance. Incumbent oversees and manages the EE instructional and teaching labs, instructional cleanroom and EE shop; advises and collaborates with faculty regarding research labs and instructional lab materials and assignments; trains students on proper and safe use of equipment and prototyping skills; trains students, Teaching Assistants (TAs), and other personnel in all aspects of laboratory and safety procedures. Incumbent evaluates the adequacy of all electronic systems, configurations, assembly/construction, feasibility, testing and calibration of equipment, designs and various aspects of the operation for the entire college teaching laboratories and provides support for many of the college research laboratories. Individual reports the department chair of the Electrical & Computer Engineering (ECE) department and on a dotted line to the ECE department manager. Individual is the department Laboratory Safety Officer (LSO), Department Safety Coordinator (DSC) and a Building Emergency Staff (BES) member.

May provide engineering information and advice to Principal Investigators and/or other faculty and research personnel with administrative responsibility for the research program or teaching facility.
  • Collaborate on department's engineering design projects for education and research purposes. Coordinate and perform routine maintenance of ECE instructional labs and cleanroom and laboratory equipment including, calibration and standardization to ensure operational safety and conformance. Review and advise on technical documentation including procedural manuals, laboratory experiments, safety protocols, project plans, and departmental projects and reports.

Gathers, analyzes, prepares and summarizes annual and semi-annual reports.
  • In capacity as LSO and DSC, conducts annual safety laboratory inspections and audits. Reports results to appropriate personnel and offices utilizing established reporting tools and methodologies. Assists and advises non-conforming labs and personnel to take action needed to bring labs and/or personnel into compliance. Provides necessary follow-up to ensure needed action is accomplished in a timely manner.

  • Including, liaise with representatives of vendors and manufacturers for parts, components and equipment; advise on cost and performance trade-offs and consider alternative solutions to complex problems; install and interface new labs, systems and equipment.

SAFETY: Safety is a critical aspect of the position. Responsibilities include: (1) Incumbent is responsible for the security of facilities under his/her span of control and the safe operation of the teaching and research laboratories and other associated department facilities and equipment; (2) following university guidelines for the safe use and disposal of chemicals and other materials used in instructional (including cleanroom) and research labs; (3) and providing training, instruction and supervision of instructors, researchers and students in the safe operation of the lab facilities and equipment. As department Laboratory Safety Officer (LSO) duties include: (1) developing and maintaining a comprehensive lab safety plan to include, Injury and Illness Prevention Plans (IIPP), Chemical Hygiene Plans for the department and coordinating compliance with the safety plans; (2) assisting faculty and researchers with compliance to campus safety requirements and procedures in research labs; (3) collaborate with other college LSOs performing safety inspection of college labs; (4) assists faculty and researchers with maintaining proper storage of chemical inventories and other hazardous materials used in the research labs; (5) serves as Department Safety Coordinator (DSC) acts as a liaison between the department and UCR's Environmental Health & Safety (EH&S) and BCoE's Safety/Facilities manager; (6) disseminates information and technical guidelines on waste management procedures and campus policies and procedures for laboratory health and safety; (7) provides solutions for safety issues. Serve as the lab safety officer, providing technical support and training to faculty, teaching assistants, staff and students to ensure compliance with safety regulations and guidelines and completing the annual lab safety audit.

Maintains up to date inventories of supplies, benchstocks, consumables, components, parts, hardware, chemicals, gases, tools and equipment to ensure readiness for educational and project activities. Provides periodic update on location records checks on lab equipment. Prepares tools, parts and equipment for required laboratories to faculty, TAs and students. Checks out materials to faculty, TAs, researchers and students and recovers from them when tasks or lab sessions are complete.

Provides guidance and technical support to student clubs offering various prototyping workshops (e.g., soldering, PCB mill, 3D printing, etc.) and project management skills to ensure safe and proper practices. Work schedule, in consultation and with department chair approval, may be flexed, to accommodate activities and student schedules (e.g., working outside normal business hours, weekends, etc.).

Install and interface new labs, systems and equipment. Maintain relevant information related to labs, cleanroom and equipment to manage inventory and provide information for budgeting and planning and to assist with ABET evaluations.
