Custom Scope
Utilizing a theoretical understanding of career development, advises students and alumni within a limited area of career services, such as individual counseling, career planning, or improving job search competencies. Receives guidance from higher level Career Services Specialists.

Department Custom Scope
UCR Extension is the continuing education division of UC Riverside offering a wide range of programs designed to meet the needs of students and employers. Extension is launching a new apprenticeship program in partnership with employers of IT and Advanced Manufacturing industries. Reporting to the Director of Program Development, the Career Service Advisor/Mentor supports the development of apprenticeship opportunities by providing guidance to students of Extensions IT and Manufacturing certificate programs and supporting relationships with community partners.

Advanced degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training. Required

Experience advising continuing education students. Preferred
Knowledge of public job and career support systems, i.e., WIOA, America's Jobs Centers, Employment Development. Preferred
Experience advising or counseling adult student populations in higher education settings.. Preferred
Experience implementing or providing programming support in continuing education organization. Preferred
Relationship management experience. Preferred
Experience working with diverse populations including veterans, military spouses, people with disabilities, women, people of color, or the formerly incarcerated. Preferred
Experience with job, internship, externship, practicum,or apprenticeship placement. Preferred
Experience working with IT and Advanced Manufacturing industries. Preferred

Helps clients identify their interests, values, skills, and personality, and understand how these factors relate to academic/career satisfaction and choice.
  • Counsels adult students enrolled in certificate programs on potential career paths.

Provides guidance/assistance in researching educational and occupational opportunities.
  • Act as a primary point of contact for students in the program in regard to programmatic career outcomes. Supports the development of apprenticeship programs by matching students with opportunities in the community.

Helps with decision making, goal setting, action planning, and identifying internal/external obstacles to obtaining goals.
  • Maintain records for students, employers, mentors, partners, and support agencies. Gathers and analyzes student progress data to support grant reporting requirements. This includes managing relationships with apprenticeship partner organizations to support the success of the students. May include site visits.
