Custom Scope
Utilizing advanced, specialized expertise provides direction and guidance to lower level Student Services professionals in specialized student life and development programs, and resolves the most complex cases/situations; and/or has programmatic responsibility for a discreet complex Student Life & Development function or content area.

Department Custom Scope
Under the direction of the Director of African Student Programs, the Assistant Director of African Student Programs shares in providing leadership for the execution of the African Student Programs mission through the administration, supervision, advising, training, and guiding of professional and student staff, individual scholars, and student organizations while providing appropriate support and resources. The Assistant Director will be able to lead in the development and implementation of educational and outreach programming that highlight and celebrate the spectrum of Blackness that impacts scholars who identify within the Pan African Diaspora. The Assistant Director assumes leadership responsibilities and delegated decision-making authority for all department operations in the absence of the Director. Evening and weekend work will be required based on program and event offerings or to best meet the needs of scholars.

Key Responsibilities

Develops educationally transformative programs that result in cultural awareness and appreciation for diversity and cross-cultural engagement centering on the importance and intersectionality of Black culture (e.g. Pan African Theme Hall (PATH), Black History Month, Black & series, Melanin Masterclass, etc.). This includes retention programming that primarily focuses on college learning, academic development, professional development, and social awareness.

Manages a program of providing counseling, guidance and development to student leaders or student government. Oversee(s) a program(s) and service(s) of diverse complexity and scope.
  • Provide professional learning experiences that enable student staff and interns to develop the personal and professional skills needed to thrive in a diverse society.

Administers comprehensive student program(s) and/or administers comprehensive programs in the residence halls.
  • Promote and develop dynamic educational programs and events that enhance the Black scholar experience at UCR, create a caring and inclusive campus, and highlights the experiences of those from the education and student affairs.

Develops and maintains complex or sensitive relationships with external organizations critical to program success. Represents the organizations to UC, the local community, and other relevant audiences.
  • Collaborate with other campus units and student organizations on programming, advising, and leadership development of Black scholars. Create partnerships with student affairs units and academic departments across campus to ensure resource gathering and student advising.

May provide strategic vision and oversight on development of program design and applicability. Measures, assesses, and evaluates programs and staff.
  • Maintains documentation and assessments on all events and experiences; including but not limited to program sign-in sheets, assessments, photo albums and video archives, as part of ASP's program assessment and success initiatives. Documentation used for in-unit assessment efforts is used to build future programming and to expand stakeholder's (e.g. Black Alumni Chapter, BSEWG, etc.) knowledge of ASP's work. Advise ASP affiliated student organizations and create leadership development workshops for their members.

May supervise clerical and/or student staff.
  • Assist with the hiring, training, supervision, and evaluation of professional and student staff, as well as the recruitment of student volunteers, and interns.
