Custom Scope
Independently oversees a comprehensive communications program for a unit or school with moderately complex communications requirements. The communications program usually includes written, visual, digital and electronic communications. Works with management to develop and execute organizational communication and market branding strategy. Designs and implements information campaigns.

Department Custom Scope
The Communications Specialist is responsible for coordination and implementation of a comprehensive and strategic communication plan focused on creating a streamlined and seamless administrative experience for UCR's undergraduate student community. In partnership with University Communications, the incumbent is responsible for developing and maintaining audience specific content (inclusive of, but not limited to, students, staff, academic advisors, and faculty) and working with key campus departments to push information outward on critical topics related summer session, financial aid, the academic calendar, registration, and other areas that are important for students to understand in order to successfully navigate their academic journey and that align with the campus and organizational strategic plan and enrollment and retention goals.

Key Responsibilities

Description % Time
Identifies specific communications needs and develops the content and process for organizational improvements.
  • Utilizing the campus acquired CRM, develop a personalized and automated communication plan to current students that maximizes the opportunity to keep students on track with the critical administrative processes needed to be completed in order to move through their academic journey in a seamless and timely manner (summer session enrollment, financial aid deadlines, credit hours, etc.) In collaboration with University Communications, develop a web presence that integrates business processes across Enrollment Services from the lens of the process not the department

Advises and consults with departmental/college administration regarding all aspects of communications including developing strong communications strategies that effectively deliver the desired message, policy interpretation, and problem resolution.
  • In partnership with the AVC, assess opportunities and appropriate channels to provide regular updates to the campus community with the objective of sharing relevant and critical Enrollment Services information outward in a timely manner to ensure the staff across campus can serve the UCR student community with the best information available.

Using a web design tool, such as CANVA, is responsible for the production and deployment of items such as the monthly registrar newsletter, flyers and one-sheets such as check lists, materials for outside (non-UCR) organizations (e.g. CAAP), PowerPoint presentations, simple updates to transactional email campaigns.

Evaluate opportunities to unify student communication channels (social media, phone, web, email, in-person) into a streamlined interface that allows for outward communication to students and eliminates duplication of effort

Ensures production of high quality products that effectively deliver the desired message within budget and time constraints.
  • Keeps up to date with best-practice communication techniques in order to support the delivery of nuanced information to the UCR community in a way to provides clarity to the consumer of the information and as a result reduces inquiries to the HOSS and/or home department

Works in collaboration with University Communications to deliver Summer Session marketing collateral and socialize key summer session messages to campus stakeholders in a timely manner with the goal of increasing summer session enrollment

Regularly survey Enrollment Services stakeholders (students, faculty, staff) to get a better understanding of how to make continued adjustments to how our various products/services are communicated and delivered with the goal of making continuous improvements that support student success
