Custom Scope
Responsible for the conservation program within a museum or library. Exercises judgment in selecting methods and techniques for meeting goals. May supervise fewer than 2.0 FTE. Instructs lower level conservators on complex procedures and practices. Researches and recommends solutions to overarching and complex preservation and storage needs affecting the collection.

Department Custom Scope
The University Library Conservator is responsible for the preventive care and conservation treatment of flat paper items, bound materials, manuscripts, three-dimensional objects, photographs, paintings, textiles and other woven objects that are included in the general circulating collections as well as in the Special Collections & University Archives collections. This role is responsible for the execution and supervision of artifact conservation activities including handling questions with digital imaging, re-housing, condition surveys, and storage upgrades and will also provide expertise to support acquisitions, loans, exhibitions and other endeavors fundamental to the UCR Library operations. The Conservator is also expected to coordinate and/or contribute to other Library preservation needs such as, but not limited to, fine art, emergency management, and environmental monitoring. The successful candidate will be responsible for project management and training of the specialists, technicians, volunteers and others as assigned.

Key Responsibilities

Description % Time
Conducts surveys of conservation needs of the collection, and recommends priorities.
  • Carries out conservation examination, analysis, research, documentation and treatments as identified, assigned and requested in a manner that is in compliance with and adheres to the standards of the American Institute of Conservation Code of Ethics and Guidelines for Practice. Remains current with advances in conservation and analytical techniques.

Responsible for the long term care of the collection.
  • Recommend new equipment and lab upgrades. Purchase supplies and equipment for conservation activities. Provides daily training, technical, and administrative supervision for assigned staff and/or student workers. Manages assigned student workers and/or staff, laboratories and work areas. Ensures that work is conducted in a safe manner. Ensures that the work areas are maintained in a clean, organized and secure condition to ensure the safety of both the staff and the collections. Participates in the preventive maintenance of the collections demonstrating proficiency in environmental monitoring, microclimates, and integrated pest management.

Reviews objects requested for loan and exhibit.
  • Prepares condition documentation for acquisitions, loans and exhibitions as indicated or requested. Construct or consult on custom storage containers for artifacts and works of art with special needs. Contributes to condition review and decision making for outgoing loan requests. Participates in Special Collections and Digitization projects especially those including storage, object transport, emergency response and exhibition.

Develops and implements conservation plans.
  • Consults with relevant UCR community stakeholders on conservation work as needed and appropriate. Provides consultation on condition and storage assessments.

Establishes treatments, estimates treatment costs.
