Department Custom Scope
Under the general direction of the Child Development Center Site Coordinator or CDC Executive Director, the Lead Teacher organizes and coordinates the care and developmental activities of children from birth to 5 years of age, and will provide a developmentally appropriate early education preschool program, following program standards of the California Department of Education and National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) with strict adherence to the NAEYC Ethical Code of Conduct. May assist the Site Coordinators and/or ED in a liaison capacity with academic personnel conducting research projects at the Center. In coordination with the Site Coordinators, oversees the implementation of policies and procedures relating to the care of children. Responsible for providing input on long range planning to the ED and/or Site Coordinators, while also providing oversight to Teacher I's and Assistant Teachers. May also serve in the Site Coordinator's absence either on a routine basis or during the Center's extended hours of operation, or on an occasional basis for up to thirty consecutive days. Must meet applicable Title 22 and Title 5 requirements for this type of appointment. The Lead Teacher will also work as part of the Child Development Center teaching team.

Oversight of Center and Curriculum: Oversee and assist teachers (CDC Teacher I) with planning the educational curriculum utilizing Developmentally Appropriate Practices, Desired Results as required and current research with techniques to support the early care and education program for children ages 3-5 years or birth-3 years in an atmosphere that is respectful of young children and provides continuity of care.

Oversight, Staffing and Training: Oversight of staff, including recruitment, selection, training and administration of performance evaluations. Participate in the interview process, using his/her own judgment in selecting the candidate and recommends to supervisor who should be hired. Assists in the evaluation of the performance of Teachers, Assistant Teachers and Student Assistants. Provide oversight in the classroom to teachers in the form of curriculum support, behavior management and guidance on instruction, problem solving and day to day classroom challenges as they arise.

Portfolio Management: Create and maintain portfolio assessments for 4-12 children based on assignment in a Title 5 classroom. Title 5 Portfolio will include Desired Results Developmental Profiles utilizing the web based eCompendium DRDP-R Computer Program, Individual Education Plan (IEP), anecdotal records, teacher and parent observations, photographs and other items documenting the child's progress and milestones. Maintain classroom portfolios that verify and document the classroom procedures, and adherence to accreditation standards. Classroom portfolios are newly created every five years during the re-accreditation process.

Lesson Plans and Course Schedule: Create monthly lesson plans for primary assigned classroom that specify themes, activities and learning centers where experiences in art, large and small motor physical development, dramatic play, science, language (both receptive and expressive) using the Creative Curriculum, including nutrition/health, social-emotional, multi-cultural competency, music and cognitive activities are provided based on the needs of each child as determined through the on-going assessment and Developmental Profiles. Oversee the development of daily schedules that allow for a variety of activities that support all aspects of the child's development, with required and appropriate percentages of time for indoor and outdoor activities that support both large and small/fine motor development and allows for creative expression.

Policies, Procedures and Planning: Oversee the implementation of policies and procedures relating to the care of infants and children into classroom practice. Provide input to Site Coordinators and Executive Director regarding long range planning for the educational services of children within the Center. Responsible for serving in the Site Coordinator's absence on a routine basis, or on an occasional basis for periods of up to 30 days, as needed to support the successful running of the Center.

Enrollment: Conduct intake meetings with new families prior to entering program; collecting information necessary to develop and plan individualized program, and determine family's specialized needs. Schedule parent/teacher conferences twice each year (required) and as needed to keep parents informed of child's progress, using developmental profiles and portfolio assessments to provide documentation of child's progress.

Communication, Newsletters and Notifications: Write and submit monthly newsletters for groups of classrooms within assigned program component (Infant/Toddler or Preschool), to include classroom information, updates and other notifications as need to maintain and support consistent communication with families.

Health and Safety Compliance: Responsible for oversight and compliance with all health and safety requirements of the classroom environment according to Title 22 of the Health and Safety code assigning tasks to assistant teachers and student assistants throughout the day as needed. (Which should include disinfecting tables before and after food service, floors, sinks and other areas as assigned).
