Custom Scope
Responsible for a specific technical aspect(s) of theater production. May include responsibility for maintenance of theater venues, shops, and storage facilities, including facilities and stage equipment, tools and materials, and developing and implementing operational procedures for all users within the facilities.

Department Custom Scope
Under the supervision of the CHASS Facilities Director this position is responsible for all activities associated with theater productions, including theater coordination and procedures. Responsible for overseeing the technical aspects of various events, concerts, plays, and recitals. Operates the sound, lighting and video for various events.. Constructs and installs theatrical production elements in multiple production areas (light, sound, video, properties, scenery). This is a limited position for less than 1000 hours in 12 months (40% appt). The working schedule will vary based on production demands. The schedule may include night and weekend work. There are 3-5 open positions.

Key Responsibilities

Fabricates and installs theatrical production elements from design and design specifications provided by theatrical designers in a specific production area(s) such as lights, sound, video, costumes, hair/make-up, properties, scenery, scenic treatment, etc., from design and design specification provided by theatrical designers.

Runs stage lighting, video and sound consoles for shows. Provide stage management and student crew oversight. Load equipment in and out of shows.

Determines construction techniques and details of construction/installation and creating construction drawings, patterns, jigs, and samples.

Identifies equipment needs; coordinates repairs; may participate in planning of major events. Ensures safe, proper practices of theatrical construction and installation and in safe use, proper handling, and maintenance of all machinery, power and hand tools, and other shop and theater equipment in accordance with federal, state, OSHA and Cal/OSHA guidelines and regulations.

Train students in laboratory settings associated with theatrical production; may evaluate students in laboratory work.

Attend technical/dress rehearsals and consult with directors/designers regarding notes, changes, and/or additions.

Maintains shop facilities and equipment and coordinates with senior managers regarding theater facilities and property maintenance.

Researches new materials and techniques to fulfill designer concepts.

Oversees borrowing/rental of theatrical production elements.

Attends department staff and production meetings.
