Custom Scope
Under direction of higher-level K-14 Academic Preparation Specialist, works with assigned institutions and organizations to implement academic preparation programming of moderate scope. Maintains program visibility in schools. Maintains collaborative relationships with K-14 institutions and/or community entities. Maintains relationships with higher education institutions.

Department Custom Scope
The Office of TRIO Programs provides pre-college programs that aim to prepare and motivate high school students to pursue a higher education. The TRIO Programs are federally funded through 5-year grants from the U.S. Department of Education. Under general supervision of the Assistant Director, the High School Coordinator (HSC) travels to target high schools to meet with participants. In addition, the HSC assists in the planning and coordination of events such as field trips, Saturday Sessions, and the summer program. The HSC will be in charge of initiating the recruitment, selecting, training and overseeing High School Mentors (Tutors). In addition, the HSC will assist with the creating of all High School Transcript Evaluations. Lastly, the HSC will have an integral part assisting the Assistant Director with the recruitment of all program participants. The Upward Bound grants are currently in year 1 of 5.

Key Responsibilities

Description % Time
Under direction of higher-level professional: develops and maintains relationship with a group of K-14 students by delivering individual and group advising services.
  • Responsible for assisting Upward Bound in meeting objectives as set forth by the Upward Bound grant proposal.

Implements grade-appropriate college-going workshops, curricula, materials, and activities.
  • Travels to schools to conduct advising sessions with program participants. May be required to drive a university vehicle for field trips, programming, professional development, and activities.

Recruits and enrolls K-14 students for program participation and services.
  • Assist with the identification, recruitment, screening, and selection of applicants to ensure eligibility per federal grant regulations.

Develops student academic plans to ensure post-secondary admission eligibility.
  • Will be required to create a Four-Year Plan and Transcript Evaluations for each Upward Bound participant.

Serves as advocate for students and parents in the college-going process.

Serves as liaison between the program and the students and parents.

Develops and maintains relationships with parents/families to support student academic success and access to higher education.

Delivers college-going workshops to parents and families at community and school sponsored events.

Ability to maintain cooperative relationships with school district administrators, school counselors, principals, teachers, and community contacts. Required
Knowledge and experience working with a diverse student population, and sensitivity to culture, race, ethnicity, gender identity, sexual orientation, and socio-economic status. Required
Experience advising and supporting educationally disadvantaged and academically at-risk students regarding postsecondary opportunities and careers. Required
Knowledge and understanding of K-14 education. Required
Thorough knowledge of high school graduation and college entrance requirements. Required
Knowledge of higher education institutions (UC, CSU, CC, etc.), admissions and financial aid requirements, and the ability to interpret policies and procedures to youth, parents, and school representatives. Required
Demonstrated ability to conceptualize, plan, and help coordinate educational programs that meet specific needs for program participants, per federal grant objectives. Preferred
Excellent oral and written communication skills. Preferred
Proven ability to handle confidential and sensitive information with diplomacy and tact. Preferred
