Works independently under general supervision.

Department Custom Scope
Under the general direction of the Lead Academic Advisor/Assistant Director in the College of Natural and Agricultural Sciences (CNAS) Undergraduate Academic Advising Center, the position provides fundamental academic advising to prospective and current undergraduate students and uses the principles of developmental academic advising and knowledge of teaching and learning theory to promote academic, career and life goals in an effort to support student academic success, retention, timeliness to degree and intellectual and personal development. This position is responsible for programs such as the CNAS Transition Advising program, the CNAS articulation officer, CNAS Scholarship and awards program, and the CNAS Commencement programmer.

Work with various programs meeting the goals of the program, communicating with faculty, staff and co-workers across campus, collecting data to provide documentation of the programs successes and problem solve for accuracy.

Advises undeclared student population including students who are permanently discontinued from CNAS and CHASS students transitioning to CNAS by using developmental academic advising to assist students to examine, clarify and meet their educational, career and life goals. Reinforce student self-direction, motivation, achievement, self-sufficiency and fit with major.

Provides advice and assistance to students on all aspects of their academic experience, including progression and requirement matters for the department/school/college.

Advises new and continuing instructors on departmental/school/college and university policies and procedures.

Advises on complex transfers from other institutions such as those in the midst of advanced degree completion and coursework in other programs.

Evaluates and advises students in petitions for exceptions to departmental/school/college and/or Graduate Division requirements.

Advises new and continuing instructors on student advising issues.

Identifies students with GPA or progress problems, advises students, and recommends appropriate courses of action by the department/school/college (e.g., academic probation, dismissal).

Assists faculty on determining course scheduling needs for student progression to graduation.

Participates in planning academic curriculum in collaboration with chair/dean and faculty, and with other departments, to ensure student's progress through course sequences, avoid conflicts, and ensure compliance with organization-wide policies.

Determines barriers, distractions, and complications affecting a student's academic success, helps students recognize these key non-academic issues, and makes appropriate referrals for additional therapeutic counseling and/or assistance from other units.

Advises students on a wide range of course possibilities and/or ways to complete degree requirements that may not be clearly defined.

Review, evaluate and communicate with CNAS UAAC staff and Undergraduate Admissions staff to correct errors in transfer course evaluations.
