Key Responsibilities

Provides assistance, on behalf of the survivor/victim's interests, accessing and navigating in the court system, the District Attorney?s office, medical care, victim's compensation and other victim rights, and may assist with other services such as providing emergency housing, food, clothing, transportation and assistance, referrals to local rape crisis and domestic violence centers. Obtains pertinent information from clients and other sources to serve survivor/victim's interests.
  • Assist CARE Assistant Director of Advocacy in developing and evaluating advocacy services and crisis-response protocols.

Identify and develop strategies to reach diverse communities, particularly underserved populations. Develop, facilitate, and participate in outreach efforts.

Provides immediate crisis intervention, resource information and referrals. Implement best practices and techniques in accordance with California law (civil and criminal) and campus policies in a non-judgmental manner, maintaining confidentiality as defined by applicable professional codes, laws and policies.

Provides advocacy support and referrals for the complainant's friends and family in order to support efforts towards recovery.

Assists with the development of workshops and training programs for first responders, service providers, and university officials.
  • Works with CARE Assistant Director of Advocacy to develop, implement and evaluate best practice models centered around trauma-informed healing modalities for survivors/victims of sexual assault, dating/domestic violence and stalking.

Maintains confidential case files. Collect and maintain baseline statistics. Review data and trends as determined and provide appropriate reports. Uses reporting data to improve advocacy efforts and outreach services.

Administer confidential and privileged, comprehensive, empowerment-based and trauma-informed crisis intervention, on-going advocacy, and support services to those that experience sexual harassment and violence, stalking, and intimate partner violence.

Manage multiple cases and function as liaison between survivors/victims and campus and community resources. Coordinate campus and community resources to support individuals.

Advises on trauma-informed response skills. Serves as a general resource and provide consultation to students, staff, and faculty seeking information and services.

Implement culturally-relevant services, support, and resources. Infuse social justice and multicultural competence into every aspect of the development and implementation of services.

Assist with the development of, and regularly improve, protocols and procedures related to advocacy and survivor support services. May work with key stakeholders, including: law enforcement, local survivor support agencies, residential programs, Title IX, counseling services, Student Conduct, HR, Academic Personnel, and others to develop protocols and procedures.

Develops and maintains positive, productive, and effective relationships with local community based organizations to assist with advocacy and referral efforts.

Assist in the development of long- and short-range goals for survivor support services, evaluation of annual goals and objectives for the unit; and development of multi-year strategic plan.

Develop and maintain relationships with broad and diverse campus groups, including: student organizations and student leaders, Title IX, University and local police departments, health services, women and gender programs, Student Conduct, Human Resources, Academic Personnel, and Residential and Student Services Program, Office of the Registrar, Financial Aid, academic deans and advisors, and many others.

Ability to work with individuals who have experienced a sexual or domestic violence issue. Required
Knowledge of the U.S. Department of Education?s Office of Civil Rights/Title IX, Violence Against Women Act, Clery Act, CA Victim's Rights Laws, and The White House Task Force to Protect Students from Sexual Assault, and other relevant legislation and reports. Required
Organizational and planning skills to achieve progress on multiple, simultaneous projects, to meet deadlines and to maintain a high level of productivity in a dynamic, fast paced environment. Required
Ability to change focus and manage interruptions effectively; answer immediate victim/survivor requests. Required
Strong experience with computer programs used in the university such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, case tracking systems and other key programs necessary to perform the requirements of the position. Required
Demonstrated ability to work with people of various ethnic, cultural and socio-economic backgrounds, sexual orientation and gender identities. Required
Incumbent must report to a qualified counselor as defined by California Evidence Code section 1035.2(a)(1). Required
Interpersonal skills and political acumen to work effectively within and outside of the university system in developing relationships and programs to address programmatic issues and needs. Experience cultivating and sustaining ongoing collaborative relationships with a wide array of constituents (staff, faculty, students, community members, and with campus and community organizations) in order to accomplish goals. Strong skills in assessing levels of emotional distress and reacting appropriately. Required
Demonstrated experience managing complex and difficult decisions when university policy is ambiguous, there is latitude for usage of judgment, or the client?s reaction to advocacy methods may be less predictable. Ability to recognize complex cases that may require transferring to an advocate with more experience. Required
Communication skills to prepare and deliver presentations and to prepare written reports, correspondence, proposals, program assessments, email and other materials for a variety of audiences ensuring compliance with departmental and university guidelines, practices and principles. Required
Experience in public speaking, training, and facilitating curriculum and services in front of diverse audiences. Required

Must be able to provide services, advocacy and crisis intervention during non-business hours as appropriate. Required
Must maintain confidentiality within the bounds of applicable laws and regulations, including Evidence Code 1035.2 and 1037.2. Accordingly, advocate is not reporters under SVSH Policy, Title IX, or the Jeanne Clery Campus Security Act. Required
Demonstrated ability to work with and effectively support individuals who have experienced sexual or domestic violence, sexual harassment, and/or stalking. Strong skills in assessing levels of emotional distress and responding appropriately. Required
Must pass a background fingerprint screening. Required
