Department Custom Scope
Under the general supervision of the Campus Fire Marshal, the incumbent is responsible for performing professional duties related to fire and life safety, as part of a multi-disciplinary professional/technical staff. The Campus Fire Inspector ensures that the campus is in compliance with State codes and regulations applicable to fire safety buildings and equipment, including Titles 8, 9, 19, 24, et.al. of the California Code of Regulation. In addition, the incumbent will ensure compliance with applicable national standards related to fire safety including the National Fire Protection Association Standards. Performs required inspections of fire extinguishing systems on Campus, including but not limited to: Fire alarm systems, automatic fire sprinkler systems, hydrant systems, standpipe systems, fixed extinguishing systems, and fire protective signaling systems fire rated assemblies testing and inspection.

Key Responsibilities

May oversee work of other technical staff.
  • Monitors and audits the recurring maintenance to fire systems by other trades or outside vendors and maintains computer records of such. Performs required inspections of fire extinguishing systems on Campus, including but not limited to: automatic fire sprinkler systems, hydrant systems, standpipe systems, fixed extinguishing systems, and fire protective signaling systems. Assist in providing technical oversight, regulatory interface and program audit functions to all fire equipment maintenance.

Performs technical work related to field(s) of expertise.
  • Participates in the required annual portable fire extinguisher inspection and recharging program, as required by Title 19, California Code of Regulations and the National Fire Protection Association Standards. Responsible for maintenance of the computer-based inventory tracking system of all portable fire extinguishers and other life safety systems including data entry of records and generation of required reports.

Provides training within several EH&S areas.
  • Assists in providing fire safety training, including information pertaining to the local Fire Department response protocol to the Campus. In conjunction with the EH&S Training Specialist, deliver training to various campus audiences. Provides training to Campus personnel in the proper use and application of portable fire extinguishers. Assist with efforts to develop/implement a fire safety information system that encompasses web-related outreach and training.

Develops, implements, and monitors environmental and safety programs, systems, procedures, and training in one or more of the following fields: industrial hygiene, environmental health, pest control, occupational safety, ergonomics, laboratory safety, biosafety, controlled substances, environmental protection, fire safety, radiation safety, hazardous materials control and hazardous waste management (may include shipping).
  • Assist the Campus/Deputy Fire Marshal in recurring fire and life safety inspections of Campus-owned or -occupied properties, including off campus facilities. Evaluates hazards, provides such follow-up as necessary with other departments to assist in correction of any fire and life safety violations observed.

Monitors compliance and may serve as organization liaison with regulatory agencies.
  • Participates in local professional associations to establish and coordinate ongoing fire service response education of Campus programs and facilities. Assist other campus technical staff as directed, in their respective disciplines as required to cover other areas of EH&S. maintain a level of training as a Hazardous Material Worker and is available to assist with other program areas in spill response as directed.

Assist the emergency management specialist with coordination of building evacuation exercises. Serve as witness for fire evacuation drills. Determine appropriate assembly points for each building, and update as needs change based on construction and other activities. Work with building occupants on their department emergency plans. Assess applicable procedures and needs of each department, and work on continuously evolving their plans. Integrate activities with Cal/OSHA requirements.

Inspects, investigates incidents and complaints, and recommends corrective action as needed.
  • Assists the Campus/Deputy Fire Marshal as directed, in follow-up on all accidental or unintentional fire alarm activities. Acts as Campus Fire Access liaison with outside Fire Authorities Having Jurisdiction in relationship to all off campus facilities.
