Generic Scope
Spends the majority of time (50% or more) achieving organizational objectives through the coordinated achievements of subordinate staff. Establishes departmental goals and objectives, functions with autonomy. Manages the accountability and stewardship of human, financial, and often physical resources in compliance with departmental and organizational goals and objectives. Ensures subordinate supervisors and professionals adhere to defined internal controls. Manages systems and procedures to protect departmental assets.

Custom Scope
Manages media relations operations and activities for a department / unit, including strategic planning and program management and staff supervision. May be responsible for budget and personnel development and administration.

Department Custom Scope
The Director of Media Relations is a key leadership position within the Office of Strategic Communications, requiring a minimum eight years of communications experience, at least a bachelor's degree and ability to travel. Reporting to the Assistant Vice Chancellor, Strategic Communications, the Director of Media Relations maintains and expands the university's contacts with local, statewide and national media, supervises public information representatives and advises faculty, staff and administration on issues related to media coverage.

Key Responsibilities

Develops and manages programs to publicize and promote department or unit research, achievements, education and / or scholarship through the use of news releases, news conferences, feature stories, speeches, audio and visual presentations, social media and new media venues including the internet.

Cultivates and maintains effective working relationships with writers, editors, and producers in print and electronic media on international, national, local and location levels.

As needed, provides consultative services on media relations and publicity strategies including the interview process, press conference procedures, and media and personal appearances.

Responsible for comprehensive personnel administration, including selection, training, guiding, mentoring, evaluating and as required taking disciplinary action with staff; may have responsibility for developing, implementing, and administering budget.

Develops news communications strategies and ensures responsive, professional and effective news operations for the campus. Plans, develops, implements daily and long-term operations of the media unit, including programs, personnel, and budget management. Follows national and international trends in higher education as well as those within the UC system and creates long-term, substantive media outreach for UC Riverside, its administration, faculty, staff, students and community.

In concert with the Assistant Vice Chancellor, develops strategic messages, advises on information and public relations policies and on publicity values, timing and techniques; advises, trains and assists university officers, faculty, staff and students relative to communications with the news media, special public and internal constituencies; envisions, researches, writes and edits public opinion and commentary submissions to major, established, and emerging media.

Strong knowledge of the concepts, principles and technical aspects of media relations and communications including broadcast communications. Required

In-depth understanding of best usage of print, broadcast and online media. Required
