Serves as an expert or lead development professional in a specialized area such as major / principal gifts, gift planning or corporate / foundation relations, or a specific academic discipline such as Health Sciences which has an environment that includes, or potentially includes, donors capable of making very significant contributions to the campus and / or medical center. Maintains a portfolio of donor prospects that include the most influential, complex or highest rated donors. May maintain and manage portfolio(s) of senior campus leadership including the Chancellor and VCs. May have authority to make commitments and precedent-setting decisions regarding program design, development, and procedures. May oversee the work of professional and support staff. position is expected to raise gift dollar amounts as established at each fundraiser specialization.

Department Custom Scope
The Executive Director is the managing development officer for the UCR School of Medicine. The Executive Director is responsible for creating an extensive program of engagement between the campus and external constituencies that will encourage major and principal gift private philanthropy for the School of Medicine. The incumbent ensures the success of multiple fundraising projects, and the achievement of campus objectives.

Develops, creates, writes, implements, and / or evaluates individualized marketing plans and / or strategies for cultivation and solicitation of major gifts, gift planning or corporate / foundation prospects (strategies typically require a high degree of innovation).

Analyzes needs and creates strategic and long-range plans for fundraising and other advancement programs and may have the authority to make commitments and precedent-setting decisions regarding program design, development, and procedures.

In coordination with the Associate Vice Chancellor of Development, Vice Chancellor of Health Affairs and Dean of the School of Medicine, develop School of Medicine gift opportunities and proposals which seek to match the interests of donors with the needs of the School of Medicine. Create and implement a comprehensive development program for the UCR School of Medicine, including programs designed to engage foundations, individuals, and corporations in efforts to meet the priority needs of the School, and to involve teams of campus leaders and volunteers. Advise School of Medicine and campus leaders on appropriate volunteer structures that will support the School and its mission. Develop appropriate strategies for involving campus executive management in building relationships with private foundations, major gift donor prospects, and corporations and support them in highly tailored major gift meetings and proposals relative to the School. Manage a portfolio of major and principal gift prospects (Foundations, Individuals, Corporations, etc.), developing and implementing cultivation and solicitation strategies in collaboration with School of Medicine faculty and leaders.

Provide direct supervision of the Senior Director of Development, development consultants, and/or administrative support staff for School of Medicine development office.

Knowledge/Skill/Ability Requirement
Working knowledge of fundraising, donor relations and public relations concepts, principles, procedures and techniques. Required
Working knowledge of the campus and / or medical center, its vision, mission, goals, objectives, achievements and infrastructure. Required
Good written and interpersonal communication skills to establish and maintain good working relationships throughout the campus and / or medical center and with external constituencies. Required
Good organizational, analytical and critical thinking skills. Required
Skill to maintain confidentiality. Preferred
Working knowledge of applicable laws, rules, regulations, policies, et cetera. Preferred
Proven experience in the full spectrum of development including cultivation, stewardship and donor recognition. Required
Strong sense of ethical conduct that will inspire confidence and motivation with the proven ability to persuade colleagues and donor prospects, while maintaining confidentiality in all matters as they relate to sensitive donor relations issues. Required
Experience to direct the design of strategies for cultivation and solicitation of prospective donors. Required
Seven or more years experience in fundraising, preferably in higher education and/or academic medical environment. Preferred
Exceptional organizational, analytical and critical thinking skills. Preferred
Exceptional skill in communicating persuasively, both orally and in writing, about private gift fundraising in general and in particular as it applies to UCR. Preferred
Proven ability to work effectively with deans and directors, academic and University leaders and volunteers to achieve fundraising goals. Ability to work effectively with other advancement staff in devising, analyzing, modifying, implementing, and evaluating development programs. Preferred
Recent demonstrated experience with comprehensive campaigns. Preferred
Knowledge of a broad range of academic and institutional issues related to a major research university environment. Preferred
Recent progressively responsible, high-level and related experience in a school of medicine or health sciences environment. Preferred
Experience managing professional-level staff. Required
Understanding of academic, research and education functions and operating principles of a major research university, especially as it relates to an academic medical setting. Preferred
