Department Custom Scope
The University of California, along with 40 libraries around the world, is participating in a Mass Digitization Project with Google. The Digitization Project Coordinator is responsible for providing day-to-day coordination of the Google Books and UC Federal Documents Archive (FedDocArc) projects. This is an 18-month contract position with the possibility of renewal depending upon funding and operational need.

Key Responsibilities

Applies professional concepts to perform complex or innovative responsibilities in one or more library specialties.
  • Applies professional concepts to perform complex responsibilities and technical services in providing day-to-day coordination of the Google Books and UC Federal Documents Archive (FedDocArc) projects. This includes monitoring the student workflow to ensure project deadlines are met, coordinating efforts among multiple UCR Library units, communicating with Google, California Digital Library (CDL) and other UC libraries, maintaining the integrity of records and performing collections maintenance.

Manages synchronization and exchange of electronic data between UC campus libraries. Develops and implements processes for large scale data manipulation and transformation for bibliographic record maintenance. Trouble shoots integrated library system problems.
  • Manages synchronization and exchange of electronic data between UCR Library and Google. Ensures that shipment manifests are uploaded to Google on a monthly basis. Uses the Google Return Interface to gather project statistics, receive updates on the digitization progress for each shipment, search for the status of individual items, and download and prepare monthly reports.

Maintains accuracy of library database and integrated library system by performing database maintenance.

Performs original, complex cataloging of library resources in all subject areas. Modifies records as necessary. Improves cataloging efficiencies through new techniques, systems and workflow redesign.
  • Performs collections maintenance related to the Google Books and UC FedDocArc projects. Modifies existing item and bibliographic records as necessary. Improves mass digitization project efficiencies through new techniques, systems and workflow redesign. Monitors stacks areas for accurate shelving including pulling, processing and verifying library materials and government documents.

Writes or updates cataloging documentation and procedures.
  • Creates and implements procedures to identify possible errors in digitized, bibliographic and item records.

Serves as library's technical expert.
  • Serves as library's technical expert of Superintendent of Documents (SuDocs) and Water Resources Collections and Archives (WRCA) classification systems.

Performs cataloging training for library staff.
  • Performs mass digitization of library materials training for library staff and students.

Performs other duties as assigned. Other duties include, but are not limited to assists with overseeing Collection Maintenance student employees.

Anticipates patron approach and provides accurate and courteous service to all patrons according to Access Services Public Service Guidelines. Maintains general knowledge of the UCR Library and campus in order to answer patron questions and assure the proper referral of patrons. Uses multiple online systems to determine the status of or information on patrons or materials as well as performing a variety of circulation functions. Maintains confidentiality of records as required by UCR Library and University policy. Writes and distributes Security Reports as required.

Maintains knowledge of current industry trends and performs continuous assessment of innovative methodologies, technologies and approaches. Identifies opportunities for improvement and communicates them to supervisor.
