May manage programs that include formulating strategies and administering policies, processes, and resources; functions with a high degree of autonomy.

Custom Scope
Uses advanced concepts in environmental research and facilities management to effectively assist in the development, implementation and monitoring of operational policies for a field station(s). Provides expertise related to field station responsibility, such as wildlife biology, forestry, agriculture, ecosystem research, cultivation, meteorology, oceanography etc., or technical concepts related to the area of research being conducted at the field stations. Regularly works on highly complex issues where analysis of situations or data requires an in-depth evaluation of variable factors. Exercises judgment in selecting methods, techniques and evaluation criteria for obtaining results. May serve as a team leader for other positions.

Department Custom Scope
This field station is located in a largely natural and pristine portion of the Mojave desert. This position requires the knowledge of arid and dry land habitats and the facilitation of teaching and research activities on the field station along with the coordination of those activities with each other. The director must also interact with the UC Riverside Faculty Director for the Natural Reserve System as well as the NRS office of the President in Oakland CA.

Key Responsibilities

Participates in the development and monitoring of policies and procedures for remote field stations and/or operations.

Oversees maintenance, modifications and improvements of deployed instrumentation and supporting physical plant infrastructure.

Researches, develops and implements safety procedures in accordance with regulatory requirements.

Acts as a technical consultant in the planning of research activities.
  • Includes interacting with users, facilitating teaching and research use, approving research plans, and coordinating use so as to accommodate people in their research and teaching needs

Researches and prepares reports and/or plans to meet regulatory requirements and/or assist in efforts of researchers.

Collects information and conducts research related to facilities planning, instrumentation deployment, and design of new buildings, field station hardware and systems.

Contacts agencies and land owners as needed to coordinate planning.

Participates with other UC staff in the development of a comprehensive database of biodiversity, land-use history, and other information resources suitable for the eco-informatics systems.

General Administrative and Leadership including the supervision of reserve employees and visitors, coordination with the faculty NRS Director and the Natural Reserve System office of the President, the management of the reserve budget (including the approval of expenditures), the supervision of maintenance of existing facilities and infrastructure, and the development of fund raising relationships with the local communities.

Resource Management and Planning including: -Represent the interests of the reserve to local and regional governments and agencies. -Develop, implement, and update reserve management plan.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Knowledge/Skill/Ability Requirement
Knowledge of safety and regulatory requirements relative to field station responsibility. Required

General knowledge of environmental issues relating to reserve management. Required
Demonstrated experience with applicable skills in research, collecting, analyzing and publishing scientific data. Required

Ability to execute physical characteristics of job functions, including occasional work performed outside under adverse weather conditions and be able to drive 4WD vehicles on poor roads. Required
Awareness of research and management issues relating to reserves in urbanizing landscapes. Preferred
