Custom Scope
Utilizing a theoretical understanding of career development, advises students/alumni on a full range of career processes, including individual or group advising/coaching, career planning, setting career goals, decision making, and improving job search competencies. Provides a holistic approach to student/alumni career counseling, modifies workshops and presentations as necessary; OR maintains relationships with potential employers, school admissions representatives, and other organizations to establish contacts to meet the career needs of students. Performs independently, but may receive guidance in developing new career advising/coaching services and Counsels undergraduate and graduate students and alumni on career options and opportunities, including customized services for specific populations.

Department Custom Scope
The Director of Alumni Career Programs and Young Alumni Engagement will conceptualize, plan and implement programming to build a career resources network dedicated to new and recent alumni, as well as alumni in career transition. The director will design and implement programs and events that provide career advice and mentoring, internship opportunities, online resources and will identify existing career resources available for UCR alumni. He/she will establish and maintain strong relationships with volunteers, donors, alumni, and parents, the UCR Career Center, campus schools and colleges, and University Extension to further enhance programing efforts. He/she must work independently as well as collaboratively while achieving defined goals. Additionally, the incumbent will manage programming for young alumni engagement and oversee alumni networks, assisting chapters and clubs to coordinate professional and social activities to engage alumni. Other responsibilities include participating on committees; budget and financial administration; developing marketing and promotional strategies; and providing advice and counsel in areas relating to career programs and services.

Key Responsibilities

Description % Time
Researches, evaluates, and updates written and electronic career and educational resources.
  • Develop and maintain contact with alumni constituencies such as geographic regions, academic departments, ethnic-based or special interest. Identify, recruit, train, and motivate alumni volunteers for programs and activities. Refine chapter and regional programs to better serve the Alumni Association and campus. Manage and oversee network activities to ensure compliance with Policy on Support Groups, Campus Foundations, and Alumni Associations as established by the Regents.

Researches and organizes economic and employment trend data, and designs materials for presentation to students and organization professionals.
  • Establish strategy, short and long term goals, and objectives to build a career alumni network in support of new and recent alumni, as well as alumni in career transition. Create a business plan including marketing campaigns in partnership with the marketing and communications manager to promote the program. Develop new and enhance existing alumni career resources and external opportunities to provide career development services to alumni and select student groups -Student Alumni Association.

  • Research new technologies and implement interactive web-based services, including online workshops. Conceive innovative career development programs appropriate for alumni seeking careers in all sectors of employment.

Develops and implements marketing and outreach programs to promote programs and services.
  • Collaborate with the director of philanthropy and alumni engagement, the membership manager, UCR Career Center, and University Extension to development career resources, programs, events, and alumni engagement activities. In partnership with the marketing and communications manager, develop marketing collateral (website, brochures, videos, social media) to promote career resources and alumni engagement activities. Maintains and enhances relationships with corporations and other organizations to develop and modify potential employer resources, and promote external relations with the organization relating to career services for students and alumni.
  • Identify, recruit, develop, and train volunteers to serve as career mentors and speakers for online webinars, resume writing, interview preparation, career planning, and life-skills strategies. Identify corporate partners and businesses to support career programs. Develop and manage events, professional trainings and workshops, and other professional development activities

Administrative Processes and Procedures - Create processes and procedures to collect and report data regarding program effectiveness. Provide relevant data for inclusion in the Alumni Association¿s annual report. Make recommendations based upon results of research. Design and conduct surveys of students, alumni, employers, and other important constituent groups to monitor and evaluate performance.Research and implement best practices in the profession and evaluate. Participate in decision-making regarding budget, resource allocation, and the formulation and implementation of career-related policies and procedures.

Young Alumni Engagement - Plan, develop, and implement strategies and programs designed to increase engagement of alumni 40 and younger. Identify candidates for the Outstanding Young Alumnus Award. Provide staff support for the UCRAA Alumni Engagement committee. Assist in the development of new initiatives and other programs as assigned. Collaborate with academic and administrative leadership in the schools and colleges to build partnerships and resources for graduating students and young alumni.

Strong knowledge of career development theories, adult development theory, counseling process, career coaching techniques, career decision making, learning styles, and job search techniques. Required
Thorough knowledge of needs assessment theory, processes, and practice; workshop and program design. Preferred
Knowledge of UC programs, career services, employer, alumni, and faculty needs and expectations, recruiting and staffing methods, and employment trends. Preferred
