Custom Scope
Functions as the organization expert in a disability specialty. Deals independently with a wide range of accommodation issues related to the specialty assigned. Decisions can impact university compliance and liability under federal and state disability law and regulations. On own initiative rises to manager's attention particularly contentious issues and/or especially complex situations.

Department Custom Scope
The department of Student Special Services provides services for students with various permanent or temporary disabilities that medically, cognitively, or psychologically impede academic progress. The role of the Accessible Technology Specialist is to analyze, develop, coordinate, and manage technology-based accommodations and alternate media services for students with disabilities to ensure equal access to UC Riverside's educational programs in accordance with policy and federal law.

Key Responsibilities

Description % Time
Functions as the organization's resource expert in a particular field of disability as it relates to a student's education.
  • Manages technology-based accommodations for students with disabilities including assistive technology services and alternate media; determines solutions ensuring academic accommodations meet legal standards. Develops and manages department accessible technology initiatives and services. Performs complex research and analysis of information. Gathers information, monitors, analyzes trends, makes recommendations and coordinates follow-up for a broad portfolio of services.

Evaluates/introduces new or the latest -adaptive technologies, methods, and practices for accommodation in the specialty.
  • Maintains knowledge of developments in a wide variety of technologies. Works closely and collaboratively with stakeholders and outside experts/vendors regarding disabilities, functional limitations, needs for student accommodations and available options. Researches necessary equipment and software; analyzes variables to create innovative solutions and recommends policies, procedures, and practices. Assesses and selects technologies.

Offers guidance and instruction regarding compensatory strategies and techniques to ensure students' access to the academic environment.
  • Works with and responds to stakeholders - including students, staff, faculty, prospective students, and others - to advise on technological options for student accommodations. Conducts outreach and delivers presentations to various audiences to provide education, awareness, and instructional information related to accessible technology.

Discusses accommodation needs with professors, including basic course requirements.
  • Collaborates with disability coordinators and/or faculty regarding assistive technology or alternate media accommodations needed for students with disabilities regarding exams or coursework.

Thoroughly documents bases for individual assessments in accommodation decisions.
  • Manages and maintains records of students served and services provided, in compliance with federal and state laws.

Manages alternate media services; coordinates and implements the conversion process to provide accessible materials appropriate for students with print disabilities in compliance with relevant and applicable laws and guidelines.

Trains and assists students with disabilities in using technology-based accommodations.

Communicates with diverse individuals/groups on campus and within the UC system, and with outside vendors, developers, experts and colleagues at other schools about collaborations, new technologies, and changing legal standards. Maintains a current working knowledge of applicable state and federal laws and policies related to assistive technology and alternate media.

Consults and collaborates with campus technical support offices to assist in developing training for faculty, staff and students on the use of technology-based accommodations.

Advanced knowledge of the legal framework involving accommodations for students with disabilities through state and federal laws and regulations. Required
Advanced knowledge of procedures for assessing and determining disability accommodation issues, including the Disability Compliance Office procedures. Required
Advanced knowledge of assessment, accommodation, and intervention techniques involved in employee's specialty, for example, learning disorders, mobility disability, visual impairment, etc. Required
Skill to communicate with instructors and other organizational entities regarding a student's accommodations and other academic needs. Required
