Generic Scope
Provides direct supervision typically to professionals or skilled technical employees. Functions as advisor to unit and administration. Analyzes and resolves problems, interprets policies (e.g., fiscal management, HR, contracts and grants, resource management in defined areas) and demonstrates solid subject matter knowledge. Exercises judgment within defined procedures and policies to determine appropriate action. Supervises staff to assure accountability and stewardship of department resources (operational, financial, and human) in compliance with departmental goals and objectives.

Custom Scope
Ensures smooth processes and policies are in place relative to the timeliness, production quality and delivery of graphic arts. Supervises the organization of work and oversees the operations / technical staff for one or more Printing Services sections, typically through subordinate supervisors or leads. May supervise professional staff in carrying out customer service or marketing activities. Receives assignments in the form of objectives with goals and the process by which to meet goals. Provides direction to staff according to established policies and management guidance. Administers policies that directly affect subordinate staff. Recommends changes to department policies and practices. Identifies risks and responds accordingly. Provide priority setting and work flow analysis.

Department Custom Scope
The Senior Editor is a key position within the Office of Strategic Communications, requiring a minimum of 6 years of experience in digital and print publication and copy editing. Working with the Director of Media Relations and other university officers will conceive, plan, and implement strategic communications projects. Will manage both internal and external publications that educate constituents on initiatives set by the chancellor, provost, vice chancellors and deans, as well as those established by Advancement. Will guide the planning, development, production, and assessment of internal communications, Inside UCR and UCR Today. Working closely with Senior Public Information Officers and creative services incumbent will be responsible for creating content for UCR's digital and print publications including UCR's award-winning UCR Magazine. Must have meticulous editing skills and show great attention to detail and accuracy. Demonstrated proficiency in adhering to Associated Press Standards.

Key Responsibilities

Description % Time
Supervises the leads and/or supervisors responsible for the scheduling and delivery of publications and/or the administrative operations of a section(s) in the Printing Services Department, with responsibility for quality and quantity of work.
  • The Senior Editor collaborates with Senior Public Information Officers and the editors and writers on the content creation process for UCR print and digital collateral. Will edit text for proper spelling, grammar, and punctuation; and for word economy, accuracy, clarity, and adherence to Associated Press and university style standards. Must be able to expedite content development while ensuring the content's quality. Build strong relationships with campus partners and colleagues.

Ensures processes are in place to provide for high customer satisfaction; conducts surveys and makes adjustments, responsible for customer retention, works with production staff to ensure continuity and product quality from receipt of job to product delivery.
