Generic Scope

Custom Scope
Receives employee benefits department assignments in the form of objectives and determines how to use resources to meet schedules and goals. Provides guidance to subordinates to achieve goals in accordance with established policies.

Department Custom Scope
Under the general direction of the Associate Vice Chancellor for Human Resources, the Workplace Health and Wellness Manager is responsible for full-cycle ownership of faculty and staff disability case management. In addition, the Workplace Health and Wellness Manager will provide leadership and direction for the following functions: Return to Work, Ergonomics, Workstrong, and Wellness programs. Management duties include responsibility for program management and coordination, loss prevention analysis, communications, training, reports, financial outcomes and support and collaboration with Enterprise Risk Management for maintaining compliance with University requirements for a self-insured workers' compensation program as well as disability management, workplace health and wellness, and ergonomic initiatives. Directs the development and implementation of strategies and programs to prevent loss and to minimize the financial and human impact of losses to the campus while ensuring a high level of customer service. Acts as a resource to UCR departments relating to federal and state disability laws and University policies relating to employees with disabilities, and applies those standards to program operations. Coordinates with other Human Resources functions such as Labor Relations, Benefits, Policies and Program as well as other campus departments i.e. Environmental Health and Safety, Enterprise Risk Management, Campus Counsel, Equal Employment/Affirmative Action and other campus departments as required by business necessity.

  • Lead and manage a professional staff that includes Ergonomics, Disability Management, Return to Work, and Wellness. Responsible for unit metrics and associated budget.

Recommends changes to policies and establishes procedures, as appropriate, to enhance the effectiveness and communication of benefit programs.
  • Perform complex analyses of policies, procedures, labor contract articles, federal and state regulations, and benefit systems relating to reasonable accommodation, the Interactive Process, and medical separation. Consult and provide guidance to management regarding personnel policies, federal and state disability laws. Maintain knowledge of workers' compensation regulations, University policies, federal and state laws regarding individuals with disabilities.

Oversees organization-wide communications and training concerning benefit programs.
  • Design and conduct workshops for supervisors, staff and faculty including disability awareness, federal and state legislation and UC policies regarding individuals with disabilities, the Interactive Process, reasonable accommodation, ergonomics, the TRTW program and injury prevention. Participate in committees and groups on campus and system wide.

  • Analyze loss and benefit data; collect and maintain records and statistics preparing reports as required by law, policy, procedure; provide data-driven assessment of disability experience for departments and management.

  • Maintain documentation and employee files in compliance with confidentiality laws and in accordance with Professional Code of Ethics.

As the Disability Management Coordinator, acts as the central point of contact for all cases pertaining to disability management for faculty and staff. Oversee the Disability Management Program. Facilitates the interactive process/reasonable accommodation process with the employee, their supervisor, health care providers, union representatives, and other resources as needed. Ensure accurate, timely, and complete information is documented to ensure the University's compliance with federal and state laws (ADA & FEHA). Maintain strict confidentiality standards of medical and sensitive personal information as required by federal and state regulations. Complete vocational/medical separation assessments and make appropriate recommendations to departments.
