The Web Developer and User Interface Designer is responsible for conducting website design and user interface planning, design, implementation, testing and assessment for internal communications purposes, external communications and marketing purposes and instructional services.

Key Responsibilities

Description % Time
Provides analysis for complex user research through user needs assessment and user observation activities. Applies user experience design concepts to conduct complex usability evaluations for small to medium projects and participates in these activities for medium and large projects. Gathers, analyzes, organizes and evaluates the results of user needs assessment and usability evaluations.

Recommends and implements design changes as specified from user research activities. Summarizes recommendations including approaches, trends, sources and uses. Designs moderately complex user interfaces and user interface components. May create simple to moderately complex prototypes. Incorporates web accessibility best practices into the user experience design process. Designs small to medium websites and/or architectures and contributes to moderately complex to complex designs.
  • Implements software user interfaces using front-end web development technologies (HTML, CSS, and JavaScript), frameworks (i.e. jQuery, Angular, Vue.js, Knockout, Bootstrap and TypeScript) and tooling (i.e. LESS, SASS, Webpack, Bower, Grunt and Gulp). Develops mock-ups and prototypes to elicit feedback on proposed user interfaces and workflows, iterates with customer's to make refinements, and implements web application presentation layer using modern development tools.

Participates in the user modeling process (such as personas and scenarios) using information gathered during user research. May design moderate to complex data/information visualizations or participate in larger visualization projects. May create the visual look and feel for user interface components and page layout.

Acts as liaison to developers of products and services to ensure technical feasibility and that designs are properly realized. Participates in campus, medical center or Office of the President, higher education or health sciences user experience design discussions, standards and processes.

Works with a diverse customer base to manage and update content in web-based CMS systems. Assists in evaluating content for effectiveness, accessibility and usability. Performs content updates using CMS system interfaces, or in code as needed. Designs web page layouts that comply with WCAG 2.0 accessibility standards, best practices and campus style guidelines. Coordinates with campus Strategic Communications to ensure appropriate campus design standards are applied. Provides ongoing review and assessment of the UCR Library public-facing web presence for consistency, accessibility and cohesiveness.

Works as part of the Library's Cyber Infrastructure Team to review incoming customer enhancement and project requests, coordinate with leadership to plan and prioritize work, and implement solutions using documented project management methodologies. Provides transparent communication with project leads, SMEs, management and project stakeholders. Provides ongoing application support and maintenance to facilitate an efficient and streamlined Library operating environment.

Assists stakeholders in building digital exhibits and collections by reviewing industry offerings and customizing patron facing components as needed. Evaluates third-party application extension capabilities to design and build interface solutions that are maintainable while simultaneously meeting department business requirements and furthering the strategic goal of UCR Library preeminence. Creates instructional design and online learning materials using web-based technologies. Uses front-end web development tools to create interactive instructional resources including wizards, workflows and online tutorials. Works with UCR Library Research and Instruction Team to plan and develop instructional content for furthering the UCR Library's education mission. Collaborates with stakeholders by applying web design and development expertise to realize their project vision.

Demonstrated experience developing for and managing content in modern CMS tools such as Drupal, WordPress, Joomia, and/or Magento. Experience creating custom modules and plugins to extend core CMS functionality. Experience designing web CMS content that adheres to WCAG 2.0 accessibility standards. Required
Demonstrated experience with a range of server-side web programming languages and frameworks, such as ASP.NET, C#/Java, PHP, Ruby or Rails, and/or Python. Experience with relational (such as MS SQL, MySQL, or Oracle) and NoSQL databases (such as MongoDB, RavenDB, or CouchDB) including database design, performance optimization, and programming (triggers, stored procedures, views) Required
Demonstrated experience with object-oriented software design and developing complex applications using C#, Java, or PHP and the related ability to show intermediate understanding of programming techniques and patterns.
