Custom Scope
Responsible for all activities associated with multiple / comprehensive technical aspects of theater productions, including procedures and administering / monitoring budgetary expenditures consistent with budgetary allocations, and training of staff / students. May be responsible for maintenance of theater venues, shops, and storage, including facilities and stage equipment, tools and materials, and establishing and ensuring implementation of operational procedures for all users within the facilities.

Department Custom Scope
Under the general direction of the Chair of the Department of Dance and reporting to the Department Manager. The Production Manager (PM) will take a hands-on approach to managing technical, design, and logistical elements of department productions, events, and day-to-day activities in Department of Dance spaces, in collaboration with faculty, staff, and students. The Production Manager will take a leadership role realizing a vision for all production elements of UCR Dance productions and studio spaces, in consideration of the instructional needs of the department, and in collaboration with faculty and staff. This will include guiding the department in developing a culture of effective collaboration between choreographers, dancers, designers, technicians and managers in production processes. It will also include coordinating resources available to the Department of Dance, including the Theatre Facilities Unit, Facilities Management, Performing Arts, the Culver Center for the Arts, College of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences and other potential partners such as the Gluck Fellows Program of the Arts, The Center for Ideas and Society, the School of Medicine and in some instances off-campus entities such as the Fox Box Theater in downtown Riverside. The Production Manager will guide the department in the development of effective practices for planning and executing productions and department events, including production meetings, conferences and collegium, technical rehearsals, and show runs. The PM may potentially have a role in training/instruction of students in production technology and management. Key Responsibilities

Description % Time
Constructs and installs theatrical production elements in multiple production areas (lights, sound, video, costumes, hair/make-up, properties, scenery, scenic treatment, et cetera) from design and design specification provided by theatrical designers.
  • Emphasis will be on lighting, other areas including sound, projections and scenery.

Trains students in laboratory setting associated with theatrical production; may evaluate students in laboratory work.
  • Trains and oversee students in production support roles for productions in department venues (Stage Manager, Assistant Stage Manager, Sound Board Operator, Light Board Operator, Stage Crew, etc.)

Attends technical/dress rehearsals and consults with directors/designers regarding notes, changes, and/or additions.

Administers budgets, ensuring that expenditures are within agreed upon budgetary limits.

Maintains shop facilities and equipment and coordinates with senior managers regarding theater facilities and property maintenance.
  • Manages the scheduling, use and storage of Dance Department physical assets, such as lighting, sound, projection, set, costume, props, drapery, rigging, and audience seating in Dance Department studio and performance spaces. Maintains Dance Department lighting equipment in Dance Department studio and performance spaces.

Recommends and approves expenditures for equipment; advises on planning of major alterations of existing facilities or development of new facilities.
  • Plans and coordinates improvement of lighting systems in Dance Department studio and performance spaces. Plans and coordinates future purchases and improvements in all technical areas including lighting, projection, set, costume, props, drapery, rigging, sound (in collaboration with the music director), and audience seating in Dance Department studio and performance spaces.

Establishes procedures and trains users in safe, proper practices of theatrical construction and installation and in safe use, proper handling, and maintenance of all machinery, power and hand tools, and other shop and theater equipment, power and hand tools, and other shop and theater equipment.

Ensures professional and safe general shop conditions and operations, including fulfilling reporting and record-keeping requirements and all applicable rules/regulations including federal, state, OSHA and CalOSHA guidelines and regulations.

Advises on all problems associated with multiple aspects of production operations.
  • Consults with/suggests changes to designers and directors regarding efficiency or economy of construction, installation, and operation of theatrical production elements.

Plans and coordinate load-in and strike of all production equipment for Dance Department performances.

Responsible for obtaining contracts, royalties, and agreements for productions and events. Includes generating purchase orders, performance agreements, photography agreements, etc. Also includes managing logistical needs for performers/guest visitors for production and department events, including travel, catering, and technical performance needs.

Liaises between Dance Department and University Theater, and the College of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences Facilities Management department, and other internal and external entities on technical production matters for activities and performances held in Dance Department venues, as well as those held outside Department spaces.
