Department Custom Scope
The Director of the Office of Assessment and Evaluation (OAE) at the University of California, Riverside School of Medicine (UCR-SOM) is responsible for strategic leadership, operational management, analysis, reporting collaboration and outreach for the SOM OAE unit. Responsible for the overall management of OAE and collaborative leadership with the Associate Dean for the OAE. OAE supports development, implementation, analysis, and reporting activities related to the assessment of learners, the evaluation of programs, and quality improvement efforts for all UCR-SOM educational programs, including those in Pipeline Programs, Biomedical Sciences, Undergraduate Medical Education (UME), Graduate Medical Education (GME), and Continuing Medical Education (CME). OAE provides similar services to other UCR-SOM entities that support education, such as the Quality Improvement Operations Services Center (QI-OSC), the Simulation Center, Interprofessional Education (IPE), and the Center for Teaching Excellence. As these activities often overlap with scholarly endeavors, OAE also provides consultation and assistance in research project design, statistical analysis, and manuscript preparation. The OAE also provides comprehensive data support to additional UCR-SOM units: Student Affairs, Academic Affairs, and Clinical Affairs. In collaboration with the Associate Dean for OAE, the Director is responsible for establishing and maintaining strong partnerships with faculty members, program administrators, and other stakeholders to ensure that assessment and evaluation activities align with learner needs, program goals, accreditation standards, and evidence-based best practices.

Key Responsibilities

Researches, gathers, analyzes and summarizes information for complex data research projects.
  • Participate, with Associate Dean for OAE, in accreditation- or funding-related self-studies and reviews, including those associated with the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME), Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE), and the National Institutes of Health, as needed.

Assignments require analysis of multiple factors or data sources.
  • Conduct quantitative and qualitative analyses to support data-driven decision making and action planning. Participate in strategic planning with the Associate Dean for OAE to outline initiatives, objectives, and outcomes associated with UCR-SOM learning assessment, program evaluation, and quality improvement.

  • Conduct annual program evaluation of OAE and distribute reports to key stakeholders.

Designs and establishes systems that manage, store and retrieve data for analysis to answer ad hoc informational requests and tracking of students and faculty.
  • Collaborate with faculty members, program administrators, and other stakeholders to design, launch, and maintain assessment and evaluation activities. Support SOM with evaluation and reporting needs in supporting the mission of the SOM. Offer data-generated suggestions to improve quality of programs and instruction.

May oversee the work of student or clerical staff.
  • Supervise direct reports, including recruiting, hiring, training, motivating and disciplining employees. Recommend personnel-related actions. Direct subordinates to complete assignments using established guidelines, procedures, and policies.

Support the Associate Dean for OAE in managing the financial planning process and budget for OAE, HRSA grant and QI-OCS.

Serve as an active member of various committees, advisory boards and managing boards within the SOM, across UCR and within the community. Develop and manage relationships across UCR in order to advance assessment and and evaluation efforts for academic health institutions.

Generate active scholarship, both with regular manuscript publications and pursuits of grant funding.
