Department Custom Scope
The Mental Health Educator will serve as the coordinator for the Let's Talk project, a suicide-prevention program that is grant funded through September 29, 2018, and may continue beyond that date pending funding. Let's Talk addresses the needs of all UCR students, with a focus on identified high risk student populations. Programmatic elements include trainings and educational workshops aimed at decreasing the stigma associated with seeking mental health services, and increasing awareness, intervention, referral, and help seeking behaviors. The Mental Health Educator will also play a leadership role in planning, developing, implementing,evaluating, and reporting on multifaceted, campus-wide mental health education and promotion efforts as part of the WELL and the UCR's Student Health and Wellness Services. This includes, but is not limited to, presentations, lectures, campaigns, awareness week events, workshops, training programs, and special events to the University community, based on identified needs. The Mental Health Educator will also be responsible for overseeing a peer group, including student staff supervision and training, managing a program budget, staying current on mental health trends and needs of college students, and researching evidence-based mental health promotion programs and best practices.

Key Responsibilities

Conducts needs analysis for health promotion and education.
  • Provides recommendations and metrics on feasibility of new and existing programs, based upon student needs; Analyzes trends over time on student mental health related issues.

Presents group classes on a variety of subject areas of need, including but not limited to: nutrition, weight management, smoking cessation, stress management, diabetes management, prenatal care, cardiovascular health issues, etc.
  • Implements outreach and education workshops and trainings on a variety of priority mental health and wellness subjects important to UCR students; provides gatekeeper trainings to identified target populations and offers trainings to students, staff, and faculty campus wide.

Develops, secures, and maintains any equipment or instructional materials needed to conduct classes.
  • Maintains gatekeeper training materials and mental health promotion resources for department and our partners.

Assists in promoting health education components to physicians, staff, and patients through meeting presentations, printed promotional material, etc.
  • Leads collaborative efforts and small working groups to plan comprehensive mental health education programs and awareness campaigns, and to promote healthy behaviors, resources, and services to target populations of students; Develops and maintains relationships with on- and off-campus partners critical to program success.
