Department Custom Scope
Serves as a leader of UC Riverside's sustainability efforts to foster a culture of sustainability among students, faculty and staff, identifying and prioritizing areas for institutional sustainability efforts; planning and development of short and long range plans and engaging other campus leaders to foster sustainability broadly across campus units, working closely with the UCR Director of Academic Sustainability, the incumbent will work to establish UC Riverside as a leader in the field of Sustainability by promoting broader awareness of UC Riverside's environmental, social and financial sustainability successes and accomplishments. Effectively works with all elements of the campus to communicate and further the goals and initiatives of the campus sustainability program, fosters partnerships between academics, research and operational departments to further campus sustainability goals. The position will establish and maintain an effective communication strategy, developing and coordinating education and outreach programs in support of UC Riverside's sustainability, energy management, and resource conservation programs. The Sustainability Officer will work closely with the UCR Director of Academic Sustainability to enhance and track sustainability focused on related curriculum and research. This position will also work with project managers, building committees and design teams to ensure that U.S. Green Building Council's Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) guidelines are met in all new campus construction projects. Provides expertise and advice in the reduction of UCR's resources and consumption; develops, implements and evaluates comprehensive sustainability programs and supervises pilot projects to expand sustainability on campus. The Sustainability Officer will monitor compliance with all UC Sustainable Practice Policies, as well as serve as liaison to UC Office of the President (UCOP) to ensure campus compliance with annual reporting and other sustainability policies; serves as UCR's representative to the UC Sustainability Steering Committee and represents UC Riverside's sustainability programs to the public by attending professional meetings and interfacing with external organizations. The Sustainability Officer will also act as vice-chair of the UCR Sustainability Committee. The incumbent will promote UC Riverside's sustainability program by utilizing campus expertise, peer institution best practices, sustainability literature and conferences. The Sustainability Officer will evaluate all University purchasing practices and encourage the purchase of sustainable products and services throughout the campus, The Sustainability Officer will lead the efforts in the completion and subsequent updates of UCR's Climate Action, Clean Energy, Integrated Waste Diversion, Water Action and Sustainability Action Plans. In addition, the Sustainability Officer manages the UC Green Lab program for the UCR campus.

Key Responsibilities

Description % Time
Serves as spokesperson on location sustainability initiatives. Represents the office at staff meetings or student group presentations.
  • In collaboration with University administration and the UCR Director of Academic Sustainability, shapes and delivers various campus messages to internal and external constituencies about sustainability and serves as campus spokesperson on sustainability issues as necessary. Establishes and maintains an effective communication strategy. Develops and coordinates education and outreach programs in support of UC Riverside's sustainability, energy management, and resource conservation programs.

Supports departments with sustainability projects and initiatives. Identifies issues and recommends course of action.
  • Coordinates UC Riverside's implementation of UCOP sustainability policies. Monitors, tracks and applies for applicable grants, corporate collaborations and external funding opportunities. Establishes goals and metrics for measuring UC Riverside's sustainability performance. Monitor and evaluate program effectiveness, document performance trends, and recommend and implement modifications to improve program effectiveness. Manage preparation of UC Riverside's periodic Sustainability Assessment.

Supports sustainability marketing campaigns and communication strategies. Maintains the sustainability website.
  • Contributes to the website on UCR Sustainability. Website will include various portals for the three pillars (academic, administrative, student). Establish and maintain an effective communication strategy. Develop and coordinate education and outreach programs in support of UCR's sustainability, energy management, and resource conservation programs. Develop, plan, coordinate and implement activities including, but not limited to, seminars, conferences, workshops, events such as Earth Week, etc.

Provides accountability reporting to assess environmental impacts, cost-effectiveness and progress toward goals.
  • Co-authors annual sustainability report. Serves as liaison to UC Office of the President to ensure campus compliance with annual reporting and other sustainability policies. Manages preparation of UC Riverside's periodic Sustainability Assessment. Collects data; Coordinates reporting for and manages the UCR Climate Action Plan, STARS, water activity, waste activity, sustainable food sources, and the Green Building Initiative.

Supports sustainability implementations and practices in green building, climate action, clean energy, waste diversion, and water action.
  • Develops and recommends goals in implementing green building, food service, and climate action initiatives. Collaborates with various campus stakeholders to facilitate the implementation and improvement of the Green Lab Certification Program. Develop and update UC Riverside's Climate Action, Clean Energy, Waste Diversion, Water Action and Sustainability Action Plans. Work closely with staff in various departments to draft policies and procedures for implementing sustainability practices.

Cultivates and maintains beneficial working relationships with internal stakeholders as well as community and governmental agencies regarding sustainability initiatives. Coordinates and facilitates committees.
  • Works closely with other campus sustainability initiatives, to include; Take Back the Tap and other drinking water related initiatives; Integrated waste management, to include recycle, waste reduction, waste diversion, composting, etc.; Coordinates with Planning, Design and Construction Services and Facilities Services to assure and then report that UCOP requirements for LEED building certification are met or exceeded. Represents UCR on committees and working groups related to sustainability.

Conducts independent research, analysis, coordination, and reporting on a wide variety of issues relating to sustainability.
  • Creates and maintains green material database for the campus. Researches new materials to determine feasibility and applicability for campus use and/or ability to meet LEED requirements. Develops and maintains a clearing house of best practice case studies, guidelines, financial incentives, project support services and other resources to support campus sustainability projects and initiatives.

Consults with staff and faculty on sustainability initiatives and practices. May advise interns and students on academic projects related to sustainability.
  • Supports strong communications with academic, research and administrative areas of UCR, and works to have strong communications with undergraduate and graduate students (individually as well as student groups focused on sustainability areas).
