Generic Scope
Oversees through subordinate managers one or more large, complex departments or business units with multiple functional disciplines/occupations, OR manages a program, regardless of size, that has critical impact upon the organization as a whole, such as most or all of a campus, medical center, UCOP or the UC System. Has significant responsibility for formulating and administering policies and programs, manages significant human, financial, and physical resources, and functions with a very high degree of autonomy. Oversees through subordinate managers the accountability and stewardship of department resources and the development of systems and procedures to protect organizational assets.

Custom Scope
For the executive (i.e. Chancellor or Health System CEO), develops organizational policies and authorizes their implementation. Provides advice, guidance, and assistance to the executive. Represents the organization in location-wide and systemwide meetings and discussions. Recognized as an influential leader. Makes final decisions for the organization and ensures achievement of objectives. Erroneous decisions will have a serious impact on the overall success of the organization.

Department Custom Scope
Reporting to the Dean, School of Medicine, and CEO, Clinical Affairs, the incumbent provides leadership for developing and executing strategies in four broad areas: executive consultation and strategic planning in support of the Dean/CEO; governmental and community relations; communications and marketing; and special event and projects. The Assistant Dean advises the Dean/CEO and senior leadership on matters of School-wide importance, sets priorities and executes strategy for external community engagement in alignment with medical school goals, and facilitates coordination among senior leadership in achieving the School¿s strategic plan. The incumbent develops and implements a comprehensive marketing and public affairs program for external audiences to promote the interests of the UCR School of Medicine, and serves as an advisor to the Dean/CEO and other medical school leadership on communications and external relations matters. The Assistant Dean provides strategic direction for a variety of mission-critical activities, including those related to the School¿s strategic planning and School-wide events. He/she manages selected intra-campus relationships, including those with the Chancellor¿s Office, University Advancement, UCR Governmental and Community Relations, and University Communications, as well as related functions in the UC Office of the President. The Assistant Dean represents the School of Medicine for selected campus, systemwide and external activities. The Assistant Dean leads the School¿s Strategic Initiatives unit and manages career, temporary, student staff and volunteers in the implementation of projects and programs under his/her purview. The incumbent works with a high level of independence and responsibility, and handles a workload based on priorities and timeliness of projects.

Provides leadership for: creating print and digital marketing materials promoting the medical school; developing and maintaining relationships with appropriate contacts at national, regional and local print, broadcast and web media outlets; and managing the medical school's social media presence. He/she also directs engagement with a variety of local and regional individuals and groups to broaden the school's public outreach and promote advocacy support for the school. Groups may include advocates (e.g. Chambers of Commerce, Riverside County Economic Development Agency), medical associations, workforce development boards, elected officials and their staffs and community-based organizations. Promotes mutual understanding, supportive relationships and partnerships between UCR and its affected constituent in health affairs.

Plans, oversees and executes large projects for the Dean's Office. Included in this area is leadership for: -Planning and executing a variety of events, such as the white coat ceremony, graduations, building dedications and School-wide conferences. -Executing appropriate campus and/or community tours and presentations as requested by leadership and external constituencies. -Conceptualizing information programs, special events, issues briefings, and meetings consistent with the objectives of the School of Medicine. -Providing support for leadership, faculty and student recruitment. Other duties as assigned.
