Exercises judgment in selecting methods, techniques and evaluation criteria for obtaining results. Typically leads or supervises other staff or students.

Department Custom Scope
Reporting to the Assistant Director of Ropes and Youth Programs, the Manager assists in the planning, operations, management, supervision and evaluation of the Ropes Program. These areas include the Challenge Course, Mobile Rock Wall, and the Indoor Rock Climbing Wall. Major responsibilities include assisting in planning and implementing programs, curricula and activities, teaching and mentoring student leaders, route setting, human interactions, conducting training and documenting. The manager will be responsible to maintain equipment, recommend orders for replacement items and help inspect facilities for safety and risk.

Key Responsibilities

Develops, schedules and makes programmatic and budget recommendations for highly diverse and complex programs and events. Performs short and long term planning for recreational program(s) and/or activities.
  • Maintains documentation on all income-driven events and ensures income is deposited into correct accounts. Assists in developing plans for large and small events within the Ropes Program.

Coordinates a variety of social, cultural, recreational and physical activities that are offered on a short-term or intermittent basis.
  • Assists in the annual implementation of 150+ Challenge Course events and 75+ mobile rock wall events as well as various climbing clinics and competitions.

Proposes updates/revisions to standard operating procedures and guidelines. Conducts periodic reviews of historical and statistical records and standings.

Maintains a supportive environment for program participants and facilitates involvement.

Has overall responsibility for equipment, facilities and budget for a large operational program. Coordinates all facility usage.
  • Utilizes equipment/ facility software to inspect, document and replace equipment and repair facilities on a regular basis. Assist in reviewing software and budget to recommend repairs/ replacements. Responsible to maintain scheduling software related to facility usage.

Selects, supervises and evaluates student employees, student officials and referees. Assists in development and implementation of comprehensive student employee training program.
  • Student staff supervision including hiring, training, scheduling, evaluations and feedback, as well as reviewing timesheet accuracy and following the disciplinary processes for student and volunteer staff. Development and engagement of student staff.

Enforces program policies and procedures. Conducts ongoing evaluation of recreational programs to ensure compliance with university and program objectives.

Coordinates professional and student staff to develop and implement publicity and promotional programs. Supports design, maintenance and ongoing use of comprehensive website for all program participants.

Researches, develops and implements activity-specific risk management guidelines for all programs.

As the department's technical leader, regularly provides guidance to others regarding the program's specifics, events and/or activities.

Maintain relationships / collaborates with other UCR programs to ensure compliance.

Instruct different levels of rock climbing clinics based on demand of participants at the indoor rock wall.

Attend conferences related specifically to program and provide guidance and recommendations to maintain current national standards / trends.

Maintains a comprehensive route setting program at the indoor rock wall to ensure participant demand is delivered.

Advanced degree and/or volunteer work can be applied towards the years of experience requirement. Preferred
