Custom Scope
Experienced leader for a non-credited recreational or sports program. Designs, creates, implements and instructs recreational programs for participants of all ages. Required to demonstrate considerable discretion, initiative and independence to resolve issues and perform other duties as assigned.

Department Custom Scope
Reporting to the Assistant Recreation Director Outdoor Excursions, the Outdoor Excursions Program Coordinator assists in the planning, operations, management, supervision and evaluation/assessment of the Outdoor Excursion programs. These areas include customer service and staff development in the Outdoor Excursions Shop, Adventure Trips/Excursions Program, Equipment Rentals, Wilderness First Aid certification, and Driver and Trailer Training. Major responsibilities include assisting in planning programs, curricula and activities for the Adventure/Trips program, teaching and mentoring student leaders in a variety of technical and outdoor skills, human interaction and educational/teaching skills, conducting training and leadership development workshops. Outdoor Excursions is a program of the UCR Recreation Department, and has been serving the campus and surrounding area for 25 years. Our mission is to 1) Foster life long learning, leadership, community building and wellness; 2) Inspire advocacy for diversity and environmental awareness through challenge, adventure and shared experiences; 3) Inspire individuals to learn, develop leadership skills, promote sustainability, and be responsible members of their community.

Key Responsibilities

Description % Time
Designs, plans, organizes and conducts complex recreational activity classes and/or workshops programs for program participants, individually or in groups.
  • Assists with administrative planning of all programs. Adventure Trips/Excursions Programs Leadership: Assist with and conduct Trip Leader training including day, evening, and overnight training trips, and workshops. Assist with teaching Leadership Development workshops. Co-lead trips and serve as a driver when there is a need for a higher level of supervision or training. Plan, manage, and oversee the Trip Leader Driver Training program. Assist in trip logistics/preparation/packing/sendoff.

Keeps current on methods of instruction, techniques and skills through continuing education and peer review programs.
  • Ability to maintain professional memberships in organizations and conferences (such as AORE, NIRSA, AEE, ACA, WROLC) and network with other programs to stay on the cutting edge of outdoor education and technology.

Utilizes and may provide guidance and instruction to other program instructors on best practices, procedures, methods and techniques on program activities.
  • Assists with the selection, supervision, development and evaluation of student employees. Will also assist with reviewing student time sheets for accuracy.

Oversees inventory, storage, and maintenance of sports and recreational equipment, including items of significant value. Interacts with program participants in a positive manner.
  • Assist with equipment storage, inspections, inventory, repair and maintenance of the OE Shop and related equipment, and maintain appropriate documentation of inventory and maintenance.
