Department Custom Scope
Reporting to the Assistant Recreation Director - Outdoor Excursions, the Outdoor Excursions Program Coordinator assists in the planning, operations, management, supervision and evaluation/assessment of the Outdoor Excursion programs. These areas include customer service and staff development in the Outdoor Excursions Shop, Adventure Trips/Excursions Program, Equipment Rentals, Wilderness First Aid certification, and driver and trailer training. Major responsibilities include assisting in planning programs, curricula and activities for the Adventure/Trips program, teaching and mentoring student leaders in a variety of technical and outdoor skills, human interaction and educational/teaching skills, conducting trainings and leadership development workshops. Outdoor Excursions is a program of the UCR Recreation Department, and has been serving the campus and surrounding area for 25 years. Our mission is to 1) Foster life long learning, leadership, community building and wellness; 2) Inspire advocacy for diversity and environmental awareness through challenge, adventure and shared experiences; 3) Inspire individuals to learn, develop leadership skills, promote sustainability, and be responsible members of their community.

Key Responsibilities

Develops, schedules and makes programmatic and budget recommendations for highly diverse and complex programs and events. Performs short and long term planning for recreational program(s) and/or activities.
  • Assist in the implementation of program administration, strategic plans, goals, objectives and assessments. Report on results, including strategies for process improvement.

Coordinates a variety of social, cultural, recreational and physical activities that are offered on a short-term or intermittent basis.
  • Assist with teaching Leadership Development and other workshops and events. Assist with trip and event logistics. Co-lead trips and serve as a driver when there is a need for a higher level of supervision or training.

Proposes updates/revisions to standard operating procedures and guidelines. Conducts periodic reviews of historical and statistical records and standings.
  • Maintain certification and training records of staff including CPR/ AED/ Wilderness First Aid and have the possibility to instruct these classes.

Maintains a supportive environment for program participants and facilitates involvement.
  • Help develop a strong culture based on the values of the program, department, and campus. Emphasize the importance of effective communication, sustainability and Leave No Trace.

Has overall responsibility for equipment, facilities and budget for a large operational program. Coordinates all facility usage.
  • Assists the Assistant Director in the above mentioned responsibilities. Equipment Rentals: Oversee, coordinate, and perform equipment inspections, inventory, and maintenance of the OE Shop and related equipment, and maintain appropriate documentation of inventory and maintenance.

Selects, supervises and evaluates student employees, student officials and referees. Assists in development and implementation of comprehensive student employee training program.
  • Assist with supervising Trip and OE Shop staff including hiring, training, scheduling, feedback, evaluations, payroll and disciplinary processes for student and part-time staff. Teach and mentor student leaders in technical/outdoor, human interaction, and educational/teaching skills. Train staff in team building, facilitation, and debriefing.

Enforces program policies and procedures. Conducts ongoing evaluation of recreational programs to ensure compliance with university and program objectives.

Coordinates professional and student staff to develop and implement publicity and promotional programs. Supports design, maintenance and ongoing use of comprehensive website for all program participants.
  • Represent Outdoor Excursions at campus and other events to market programs and offerings, and increase customer awareness. Update social media posts for Outdoor Excursions.

Researches, develops and implements activity-specific risk management guidelines for all programs.
  • In conjunction with Assistant Director and the department risk management staff, develop or update necessary emergency procedures, safety practices and risk management processes.Collaborate with department staff to ensure facility spaces and equipment are maintained as needed to meet industry standards for programmatic use. This includes implementing routine inspections, organization, cleaning, and maintenance. Assist with vehicle maintenance, accident reports, and vehicle safety.

As the department's technical leader, regularly provides guidance to others regarding the program's specifics, events and/or activities.
  • Maintain professional memberships in organizations and conferences (such as AORE, NIRSA, AEE, ACA, WROLC) and network with other programs to stay on the cutting edge of outdoor education and technology.

Outdoor Excursions Shop Supervision: Assist in planning, organizing and overseeing the operations of the OE Shop. Provide excellent customer service to customers, resolve issues and conflicts effectively, and oversee refund transactions. Plan, host, and implement used equipment sales on campus. Ensure effective and ongoing staff motivation and communication.
