Exercises judgment in selecting methods, techniques and evaluation criteria for obtaining results. Typically leads or supervises other staff or students.

Department Custom Scope
Reporting to the Assistant Director for Competitive Sports, the Competitive Sports Coordinator's primary responsibilities include: 1) Assisting in the daily operations of the Intramural Sports, Sports Club programs and other aspects of the program portfolio; and 2) Assisting with the supervision and management of Intramural Fields. The Competitive Sports Coordinator works collaboratively with all Recreation staff and other UCR departments to provide related services and programming to all members of the campus community. The Coordinator will also assist with developing relationships with other local universities to develop extramural events.

Key Responsibilities

Description % Time
Develops, schedules and makes programmatic and budget recommendations for highly diverse and complex programs and events. Performs short and long term planning for recreational program(s) and/or activities.
  • Assess programs and services related to program operations, participation numbers, and participant satisfaction and learning through IM Leagues software. Implement improvements in programs and services. Assist with management of the Competitive Sports budget of over $180,000 in accordance with university and departmental policies. Research and recommend purchasing equipment and supplies.

Coordinates a variety of social, cultural, recreational and physical activities that are offered on a short-term or intermittent basis.
  • Sports Clubs: Assist in the developmental, coordination, and evaluation of a comprehensive Sports Club program to include team, dual, and individual sports leagues, tournaments, special events, and conferences. Assist in the coordination of Sports Club travel for local, regional, and national trips; travel with teams as needed. Prepare and lead captain meetings for team sports. Intramural Sports: Assist with supervision of Intramural Sports program. Assist in the coordination of schedule requests for practices, meets, tournaments and events.

Proposes updates/revisions to standard operating procedures and guidelines. Conducts periodic reviews of historical and statistical records and standings.

Has overall responsibility for equipment, facilities and budget for a large operational program. Coordinates all facility usage.
  • Assists the Assistant Director of Competitive Sports in the management of the equipment, facility, and program budget.

Selects, supervises and evaluates student employees, student officials and referees. Assists in development and implementation of comprehensive student employee training program.
  • Assist in the daily supervision of (20-25) student employees working as Intramural Office Managers and Officials. Provides ongoing training and development of student employees working in Competitive Sports. Provide initial training and constructive feedback utilizing a multi-media approach. Encourage and support professional development opportunities for student staff including training programs, professional association involvement, research, conferences, and individual mentoring.

Enforces program policies and procedures. Conducts ongoing evaluation of recreational programs to ensure compliance with university and program objectives.

Coordinates professional and student staff to develop and implement publicity and promotional programs. Supports design, maintenance and ongoing use of comprehensive website for all program participants.

Researches, develops and implements activity-specific risk management guidelines for all programs.

As the department's technical leader, regularly provides guidance to others regarding the program's specifics, events and/or activities.

Staff supervision and Administration: Assist in the onsite supervision of events and activities at multiple Intramural Fields. Participate on various committees within and outside of UCR.
