Generic Scope
Provides direct supervision typically to professionals or skilled technical employees. Functions as advisor to unit and administration. Analyzes and resolves problems, interprets policies (e.g., fiscal management, HR, contracts and grants, resource management in defined areas) and demonstrates solid subject matter knowledge. Exercises judgment within defined procedures and policies to determine appropriate action. Supervises staff to assure accountability and stewardship of department resources (operational, financial, and human) in compliance with departmental goals and objectives.

Custom Scope
Supervises Student Life & Development Specialists and support staff, and administers a component of a Student Affairs or Student Life program. Independently oversees day-to-day operations, and determines goals and performance expectations of subordinates. Makes recommends concerning improvements of program/function to manager.

Department Custom Scope
The Director of African Student Programs provides leadership, guidance, and oversees programs for the African Student Programs office on the UCR campus. The Director oversees the support and development of programs and services promoting the academic, social and cultural well being of UC Riverside's students of African descent and provides the general campus with the opportunity to increase its awareness of African/African-American experience. Under the direction of the Asst Dean of Students, this position manages social, cultural and educational events. This is a critical position for the campus that establishes relationships with all student organizations, provides individual and clubs non-academic advising and referrals. The Director hires, trains, supervises, and evaluates the performance of African Student Programs professional program staff, and provides clear expectations regarding their professional performance.

  • Evaluate the needs and interests of African and African American students and collaborate with student affairs colleagues, University Housing, faculty and student leadership to develop short and long term strategic goals for African Student Programs and develops programs to meet those needs. Develop and implement a comprehensive set of social, cultural, educational programs designed to facilitate the success and retention of students. Facilitate a positive, constructive environment for African and African American students at the University.

Solves the most complex and sensitive issues arising in Student Affairs/Life & Development specialization.
  • Oversees annual operating budget and establishes budget priorities consistent with campus and departmental goals and objectives. Develops and manages a program operating budget involving multiple fund sources and types of fund. Ensures timely preparation of budget for presentation to the Student Services Fee Committee and Referendum Student Advisory Committee.

Provide Strategic vision and oversight on development of program design and applicability. Measure, assess, and evaluate programs and staff. Evaluate program effectiveness on an ongoing basis, using appropriate assessment tools, and utilize feedback to inform future priorities, enhancements, and initiatives which respond to the evolving needs of students and the University. Utilize these evaluation efforts to guide strategic planning and goal setting for the department.

Serves as a liaison with the Alumni Association, the Office of Development, International Student Services, and other campus partners as needed. May drive students and staff to and from on and off campus events.
