Department Custom Scope
The Behavioral Health Counselor provides direct clinical psychological service to the UCR campus. The primary responsibility of this position is to provide individual, couple, and group therapy to UCR students. This position provides crisis intervention services; consults with students, staff, and faculty; and serves on University committees. The Behavioral Health Counselor will also serve as a liaison to various campus communities. A successful applicant will demonstrate commitment to diversity and inclusion. Areas of particular interest/experience that would be preferred to service the following communities are preferred:LGBTQ+ communities and identities; African Diaspora; Asian and Pacific Islanders, and clinicians focused on Diversity and Inclusion. Counseling & Psychological Services is a Health and Psychological Student Services (HAPSS) department and supports student success through optimization of emotional and physical health, through direct service, education, and provision of resources and referrals.

Key Responsibilities

Description % Time
Provides counseling, clinical consultation and/or psychotherapy to clients. Develops and communicates treatment plans, provides crisis intervention/management and emergency services as required.
  • Provides counseling, clinical consultation, and/or psychotherapy utilizing knowledge of intersectionality, multiculturalism, and of diversity and inclusion and their impact on psychological service delivery in a university setting to provide direct clinical care.

Assesses clients and determines appropriate therapeutic approach in consultation with other behavioral health professionals as appropriate.
  • Provides time-limited individual, couple, and group therapy services for registered UCR students experiencing complex, serious psychological disturbances and development concerns. Refer clients to specialty psychological/psychiatric and other mental health-related services on and off campus.

Arranges for therapeutic interventions for clients with serious disturbance problems.
  • Crisis walk-in services (4 hours/week) supporting student and UC Riverside community in consultation and triage. Frequent after-hours/weekend availability and support of campus crises/challenges, occasional support for other UCR campuses per reciprocity within system, crisis debrief, and other related crisis support services. Support and evaluation for students requiring mental health hospitalization and follow-up.

Leads educational workshops, support groups and/or retreats for center.
  • Provides active and visible outreach and consultation services to the UCR campus. Participates actively in mental health outreach. Consults with students, staff, faculty, parents, etc. in areas of expertise and in response to concerns about students. Will serve as a liaison to department(s) on campus.

Participates in, or leads, training sessions and workshops to enhance treatment skills.
  • Participates in ongoing professional development and training of clinical staff.

Clinical Documentation and Case Management: Completes accurate and concise clinical documentation for all clinical contacts in compliance with ethical and professional standards and in compliance with Quality Assurance policies. In compliance with CAPS policies and procedures, manages caseload appropriately.

Other duties as assigned. These include program management and special liaisons, special projects.

Special Requirements & Conditions
Special Condition Requirement
Ongoing mantenance of valid licensure in a behavioral health displine in California, successful completion and maintenance of valid credentialing & privileging process pursuant to UC systemwide requirements. Required
Out of State licensed behavioral health counselors are required to acquire California licensure within 180 days from either submitting the application or beginning California residency, whichever occurs first. Required
Expectation of availability after hours or on weekends to serve the occasional emergent needs of students and campus challenges/crises. Required
Ability to participate in after-hours on-call rotation and other after-hours campus activities. Required
