Generic Scope
Provides direct supervision typically to professionals or skilled technical employees. Functions as advisor to unit and administration. Analyzes and resolves problems, interprets policies (e.g., fiscal management, HR, contracts and grants, resource management in defined areas) and demonstrates solid subject matter knowledge. Exercises judgment within defined procedures and policies to determine appropriate action. Supervises staff to assure accountability and stewardship of department resources (operational, financial, and human) in compliance with departmental goals and objectives.

Custom Scope
Responsible for all activities associated with the design, construction, and installation of exhibitions for a museum, including procedures, personnel administration, and budgetary expectations. Receives objectives from the registration and collection manager, curator, or museum director. Supervises preparators and other technical staff.

Department Custom Scope
UCR ARTS opened to the public in 2010, bringing together the California Museum of Photography and the Barbara and Art Culver Center of the Arts. Located three miles from UCR's main campus, Reporting to the Executive Director at UCR ARTS, and working collaboratively with all UCR ARTS curators, exhibition design team, registrar, and the Director of Education & Academic Relations, the Exhibition Manager will provide key logistical support for all exhibitions developed at both the California Museum of Photography and the Culver Center of the Arts. The Exhibition Manager will work closely with the curatorial team on the development and execution of exhibitions and related projects including the coordination of in-house and traveling exhibitions, supporting the development of exhibition-related publications such as brochures and catalogues, and drafting and coordinating exhibition contracts & agreements and tour proposal materials. The Exhibition Manager will represent UCR ARTS to the outside community, in particular with artists, galleries, and museums.

Key Responsibilities

Description % Time
Works collaboratively with curators to design exhibitions.
  • Works with Curatorial team and Registrar overseeing the planning and execution of assigned exhibitions. Utilize project management best practices, including detailed project schedules, budgets, and communication platforms, to ensure high-quality exhibition results that are completed on time and within budget. Confer with all stakeholders to be sure they are well represented and incorporated within a strong team environment. Ensure that meetings are called, and information is regularly shared as appropriate, to keep all team members moving forward. Manage implementation onsite, including setting regular meetings, and overseeing budgets. Troubleshoot any problems that arise during the course of the exhibitions installation and alert senior staff to any significant changes. Communicate with artists regarding the logistics of their art installation and any issues. Work with Finance to develop exhibition expense projections for assigned exhibitions structure. Review all invoices related to assigned exhibitions submitted by departmental staff. Oversee the production and workflow of projects. Mentor the annual Curatorial Fellow, guiding him/her to produce the best possible exhibition. Recruit and manage Curatorial interns.

Identifies and resolves work flow issues, recruits, trains, assigns work and schedules, conducts performance reviews, resolves personnel problems, and takes corrective action in accordance with applicable policies, procedures, and collective bargaining agreements.

Education and Outreach: In collaboration with education staff, plan public programs such as lectures and tours. Working with the Executive Director and Development Officer, contribute to fundraising efforts and donor relations as needed.

Further develop and manage the traveling exhibition program.

Directly supervises Lead Preparator/Exhibition Designer in the design and fabrication of components and the installation and disassembly of exhibitions. In addition, directly supervises part-time curatorial assistant.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Knowledge/Skill/Ability Requirement
Knowledge of museum exhibition design field and current trends. Required
Knowledge of the principles of conservation, security, and environmental controls, ADA requirements for public buildings, and awareness of visitor needs. Required

They will regularly communicate with artists, museum and gallery professionals, UCR ARTS staff, community members, faculty, and campus constituents and are expected to do so in a way that promotes the success of the exhibition and the goals of the organization.
