Custom Scope
Administers all finance, human resources and facilities and other operational activities for small to mid-sized academic or research program. Administers major program components, and some or all of the program's operational requirements. Develops and organizes conferences and other public forums. Works under direction of Principal Investigator or more senior Academic Program Officer to establish center agenda, funding, objectives.

Department Custom Scope
Reporting to the Director, UCR Center for Geospatial Sciences, the Associate Director will provide a range of duties and functions for the Center of Geospatial Sciences: including coordination of research activity, internal outreach within campus, and external outreach to community organizations and policy actors to ensure that projects are adequately staffed and work is completed in a timely manner. Plans and manages events including large public events, stakeholder trainings, workshops and convenings. Must be able to demonstrate a broad, team-oriented skill set, including the ability to effectively engage with all stakeholders; experience undertaking independent research to produce data-driven recommendations; aptitude for taking ownership and successfully implementing projects, with only general guidance from supervisor. Ability to represent the Center and the Director in discussions involving project partners on campus and off campus, and to be in timely communication with the Director, foundation and community partners, and key campus staff.

Key Responsibilities

Description % Time
Administers a small to mid-sized program with primary administrative and programmatic responsibility.
  • Under direction of Center Director, manages, coordinates and participates in research projects, including implementing center agenda and objectives. Oversees, trains, and coordinates the work of Postdoctoral Scholars, Student Assistants, and Visiting Scholars. This includes anticipation and resolution of problems, trends, and campus or external constituent needs. Develops scope of work, budgets, and reports for project requirements.

Works with program leadership to identify and pursue funding opportunities and revenue streams.
  • Serves a strategic role in identifying and securing extramural funding that supports the mission of the Center for Geospatial Sciences (CGS). Responsible for engaging with the CGS faculty to source new contract and grant opportunities to stimulate additional research activity in the CGS. Contributes to writing grant proposals.

Participates in the program budgeting and accounting processes to support financial infrastructure of program.

Assesses program's effectiveness, and recommends changes to program's content, policies and procedures accordingly.
  • Researches and analyzes processes and procedures, summarizes findings, policies and organizational structures in order to develop and/or implement changes and to provide consultative services to department administrators, partners and external stakeholders. Researches, monitors and analyzes regulations, legislation, research literature and UC policies for impact on the organization. Conducts post-implementation analysis to determine the need for further enhancements, finer distinctions and/or additional process/policy components.

Serves on committees representing the program, participating in short term and long term planning.
  • Proposes, leads and/or participates on planning committees and working groups. Provides strategy development for center initiatives.
