Generic Scope
Provides direct supervision typically to professionals or skilled technical employees. Functions as advisor to unit and administration. Analyzes and resolves problems, interprets policies (e.g., fiscal management, HR, contracts and grants, resource management in defined areas) and demonstrates solid subject matter knowledge. Exercises judgment within defined procedures and policies to determine appropriate action. Supervises staff to assure accountability and stewardship of department resources (operational, financial, and human) in compliance with departmental goals and objectives.

Custom Scope
Responsible for all activities associated with multiple/comprehensive technical aspects of theater productions, including procedures, personnel administration, and administering/monitoring budgetary expenditures consistent with budgetary allocations, and training of staff/students. May be responsible for maintenance of theater venues, shops, and storage, including facilities and stage equipment, tools and materials, and establishing and ensuring implementation of operational procedures for all users within the facilities.

Department Custom Scope
The Theater Production Manager assists in oversight and coordination of the day-to-day production and technical operations for the Department of Theater, Film, and Digital Production. This position is responsible for oversight of the scenery, costumes, properties, lights, sound, stage management, box office (oversight), front of house and publicity in support of multiple productions throughout the year. The Theater Production Manager establishes and maintains safe and consistent operations for all productions and works extensively to maintain a cohesive and effective work environment. This position reports directly to the Department Chair and will serve as a liaison for all scheduling matters related to departmental productions and production facilities, and supervise the work of the entire technical staff.

Supervises subordinate staff in execution, construction, and installation of theatrical production elements in multiple production areas (lights, sound, video, costumes, hair/make-up, properties, scenery, scenic treatment, etc.) from design and design specification provided by theatrical designers.

Trains/supervises students in laboratory setting associated with theatrical production; may evaluate students in laboratory work.

Responsibilities may include the following: Determines construction techniques and details of construction/installation. Attends technical/dress rehearsals and consult with directors/designers regarding notes, changes, and/or additions. Administers budgets for areas of supervision, ensuring that expenditures are within agreed upon budgetary limits. Maintains shop facilities and equipment and coordinates with senior managers regarding theater facilities and property maintenance. Recommends and approves expenditures for equipment; advises on planning of major alterations of existing facilities or development of new facilities.

Analyzes and proposes staffing requirements; identifies/resolves work flow problems; recruits, trains, assigns work and schedules; conducts performance reviews, resolves personnel problems and takes corrective action in accordance with applicable policies, procedures and collective bargaining agreements; recommends merit increases, salary adjustments, and classification reviews.

Establishes procedures and supervises/trains users (staff and students) in safe, proper practices of theatrical construction and installation and in safe use, proper handling, and maintenance of all machinery, power and hand tools, and other shop and theater equipment. Ensures professional and safe general shop conditions and operations, including fulfilling reporting and record-keeping requirements and all applicable rules/regulations including federal, state, OSHA and Cal OSHA guidelines and regulations.

Advises on all problems associated with multiple aspects of production operations.

Consults with and suggests changes to designers and directors regarding efficiency or economy of construction, installation, and operation of theatrical production elements.

Researches new materials and techniques to fulfill designer concepts.

Advises managers regarding program planning, facility planning, and curricular development; serves on department committees.

Coordinate all design, technical and rehearsal/performance activities for all season activities (theatre and film), either in preparation or in performance/production to insure that needed personnel, scenery, properties, costumes, lighting and sound are available as scheduled. Provide minimal oversight for non-season production/classroom production activities. Create the production calendar including all design and fabrication/installation deadlines, rehearsal and performance schedules. Create indiviual production calendars including maximum rehearsal and production schedules. Schedule all production and design meetings. Schedule the activities in the ARTS Studio Theatre, the Theatre Lab (non-class), and represent the department when scheduling the University Theatre.

Create the general production budget, including materials, labor (overhire and student), production personnel, royalties and publicity. Project box office income and monitor it. Coordinate the department's production portion of the Gluck grant. Supervise the recording of all production expenditures including procard receipts, P.O.'s, campus recharges, payroll, honoraria, travel and contract labor. Supervise the reallocation of production funds, and review the running totals weekly.

Provide oversight for front of house operations including house managers & ushers. Act as liaison with the Box Office Manager concerning ticket sales, prices, comp tickets, number of seats and performance dates and times. Consult with Programs Promotions Manager to insure that all publicity schedules are established and met.
