Generic Scope
Technical leader with a high degree of knowledge in the overall field and recognized expertise in specific areas; problem-solving frequently requires analysis of unique issues/problems without precedent and/or structure. May manage programs that include formulating strategies and administering policies, processes, and resources; functions with a high degree of autonomy.

Custom Scope
Independently oversees a moderately sized academic or research program and represents the program to outside organizations. Oversees all administrative operations, finance, human resources and facilities for program. Designs and develops major program components, and administers the full range of the program's operational requirements. Works with faculty on formulating short-term planning and procedures. Develops and organizes conferences and other public forums. Works under direction of Principal Investigator to establish center agenda, funding, objectives.

Department Custom Scope
Reporting to the Vice Provost and Dean of Undergraduate Education (VPDUE) the Director for the Center of Teaching and Learning (CTL) provides leadership and vision for the continuous improvement of teaching and learning at the University of California Riverside (UCR). The incumbent is responsible for developing strategies, services, and support for faculty and staff for effective teaching practices and student success. The director is expected to facilitate collaborative initiatives and form partnerships with academic and support units and will have a range of duties and functions for advancing the scholarship and pedagogy of teaching with campus partners. The CTL Director will create and promote a vision that leads the advancement of learning, educational innovation and leadership by developing and implementing best practices and research-based solutions. This includes technology integration, instructional technology and research-based pedagogical approaches. The director will provide leadership in supporting academic effectiveness and serve as a lead expert resource in teaching and learning. The director will work collaboratively with the Director of Evaluation and Assessment as well as supervises direct reports.

Key Responsibilities

Directs and administers an independent program with complete responsibility for administrative and programmatic activities.
  • Supports faculty development of curricular programming that engages students and ensures achievement of integration of learning core competencies, such as: written and oral communication, quantitative reasoning, information literacy, and critical thinking. Encourages developing educational programming that actively fosters the ability to work with others, appreciation for diversity, creativity, innovation, ethical and civic responsibility, and civic engagement. Provides pedagogical expertise in consultation with faculty to enhance teaching face-to-face, hybrid, and online learning modalities.

Facilitates efforts of various departments, managers and outside constituencies to ensure interdisciplinary collaboration.
  • Fosters collaboration to enhance the effectiveness of learning through campus outreach. Supports and sustains a culture of faculty engagement and innovation in learning by creating communities of practice that encourage dialogue among faculty regarding pedagogy. Collaborates with, other campus programs to support the development of student learning skills. Creates relationships with campus partners to develop seamless faculty support services and programs organized under the Center for Teaching & Learning.

Identifies and pursues funding opportunities and revenue streams.

Participates in advanced program budgeting and accounting processes to support financial infrastructure of program.
  • Responsible for setting service rates for unit. Operations consist of permanent funding as well revenue from sponsored grants and contracts.

Manages financial and HR resources.
  • Supervises a team of Instructional Designers, Technologists, and Student Employee Interns. Manages the salary/benefits costs associated with employees, through permanent and recharge funding.

Assesses program's effectiveness, and recommends changes to program's content, policies and procedures accordingly.
  • Plans, develops, monitors and evaluates in-service programs that align with current research on effective professional development, aimed at enhancing instructors' and administrators' knowledge about what is taught and how students acquire specific content knowledge and skills.

Serves on committees representing the program, participating in short term and long term planning.
