Generic Scope
Oversees through subordinate managers a large department or multiple smaller units, OR manages a highly specialized technical function/team. Has significant responsibility to achieve broadly stated goals through subordinate managers. Determines objectives, directs programs, develops strategies and policies, manages human, financial, and physical resources, and functions with a high degree of autonomy. Proactively assesses risk to establish systems and procedures to protect organizational assets. Determines strategies for a program with organization-wide impact.

Custom Scope
Manages a moderately complex fundraising program. Assignments typically require managing a fundraising staff comprised of several professionals and related administrative support staff. Position is responsible for the full range of development programs and has responsibility for other external relations functions, such as events, volunteer coordination and management and other marketing activities. May oversee and manage personal donor portfolio.

Department Custom Scope
The Assistant Vice Chancellor for Development, in University Advancement (AVC) reports directly to the Associate Vice Chancellor, Development, and serves on the senior Development leadership team. The incumbent will oversee development officers in capacities throughout the central development office and campus, forming a hybrid centralized/decentralized Development team that works closely with the Deans and faculty to identify opportunities for private support. In conjunction with the Associate Vice Chancellor, the AVC will help to create a holistic, strategic and thoughtful approach to the development operation. The incumbent will supervise director-level development positions in Graduate School of Education (GSOE), School of Business (SoB), School of Public Policy (SPP), and the College of Humanities Arts and Social Sciences (CHASS).

  • Assess development operations on an on-going basis and work with the development leadership to create and implement value-added programs and procedures that advance the university's fundraising efforts.

May oversee and manage the identification, cultivation and solicitation of donors and donor prospects.
  • Successfully cultivate, solicit and steward a limited, but on-going, portfolio of leadership-gift donors and prospective donors. Work with colleagues in student affairs, alumni relations, communications, and other relevant units to build a culture of philanthropy among students, alumni, faculty, and staff.

Work with the Associate Vice Chancellor for Development and the Vice Chancellor for Advancement to develop a strategy for the University's schools and colleges including comprehensive campaign planning. Represent and act on behalf of the Associate Vice Chancellor for Development in his/her absence as required. Foster and model collegiality and collaboration in the Office of Development and University Advancement.

Attend university events; may/often occur evenings, weekends, off-site. Travel as appropriate to represent the university and support fundraising efforts.

Oversee the campus gift acceptance process, including developing gift agreements, endowment proposals, endowed chair approval process, etc., with other members of the development team, faculty, and staff.
