Department Custom Scope
Under the direction of the Director for the Center for Social Innovation (CSI), the External Affairs Associate supports the Center's charge to build external relationships, enhance the Center's brand and reputation, and generate support for the Center's mission. Major areas of focus and responsibility include community relations involving nonprofit organizations, state and local government institutions, corporate partners and business associations; public policy analysis; traditional and social media outreach; and program and event coordination. The Center for Social Innovation seeks to integrate researchers, community organizations, and civic stakeholders in collaborative projects and long-term partnerships that boost collective impact and serve the needs of marginalized communities and localities.

Key Responsibilities

Develops and implements programs, events and/or communication strategies designed to inform alumni and other key constituencies of institutional programs, activities, policies, and practices; constituencies may include the general public, prospective students, students, alumni, parents, donors, campus visitors, government and/or community representatives,.
  • Establish and maintain a network of working relationships with various populations to identify policy issues of importance to regions and communities served by the Center.

May plan, implement and staff alumni events, identify recruits and assist with volunteers.

May research various topics and gather relevant data to inform unit strategic plans, keeping management informed as necessary and providing input as required.
  • Coordinate information and planning concerning community relations with Center for Social Innovation staff to ensure colleagues have sufficient knowledge of activities in order to minimize redundancies and ensure smooth operations.

May mentor less experienced staff members.
  • Attend meetings on behalf of Center Director as assigned.

Responds to constituent inquiries.
  • Facilitates positive interactions and two-way information flows with stakeholder groups. Analyzes and responds to requests from public and private partners for CSI support and participation. Keeps stakeholders apprised of CSI priorities and larger policy dynamics affecting regions and communities served by the Center.

May oversee all aspects of complex internal and external relations matters, projects and events, including coordinating special programs and overseeing production of audio/visual or written and visual materials.

Quickly and appropriately identify, address, and mitigate unforeseen and/or rapidly unfolding events that may negatively impact relationships between the Center and various constituencies, keeping the Director appropriately advised and notified.
