Custom Scope
Assignments at this level typically involve a fairly representative cross section of the situations encountered by an advocate. Fully experienced in working with complainants of sexual violence, assault or stalking in an atmosphere that may require making quick judgment calls. Assists complainants in locating resources to assist them with the specifics of their situation. Publicizes efforts through outreach campaigns targeted to diverse campus audiences.

Department Custom Scope
In alignment with CARE's mission and values of social justice and diversity/inclusion, the CARE Advocate will provide trauma-informed, confidential and privileged support, assistance and advocacy to students, staff and faculty impacted by sexual and relationship violence. Advocacy includes assistance in coordinating services and healing support with on campus departments including Counseling Centers, Student Services, Student Affairs Case Management, Title IX, the local police department, coordination of legal advocacy, medical advocacy and other assistance/local community services as needed.

Bachelor's degree in social work, counseling or related field OR equivalent work experience. Required
Is a qualified psychotherapist under the California evidence code, or has a master's degree in counseling or has one year of counseling experience with six months rape crisis experience. Required

Key Responsibilities

Provides immediate crisis intervention, resource information and referrals to complainants in a non-judgmental manner, maintaining confidentiality.

Provides assistance to clients working with various campus entities to provide campus based services, serving as an advocate in the student conduct system, various campus offices including the office of the Dean for Students, the UC Police Department, and other specialized counseling services within the University. The advocate also works on behalf of the complainant's interests in the court system, the District Attorney's office, medical care and other activities such as providing emergency support for survivors of violence including emergency housing, food, clothing, transportation and assistance/referrals to local rape crisis centers.
  • Assist CARE Assistant Director of Advocacy in developing and evaluating advocacy services and crisis-response protocols.

Provides advocacy support and referrals for the complainant's friends and family in order to support efforts towards recovery.

Assists with the development of workshops and training programs to educate various university populations on the services offered by Advocates. Develops and maintains relationships with local community based organizations to assist with advocacy and referral efforts.
  • Works with CARE Assistant Director of Advocacy to develop, implement and evaluate best-practice models centered around trauma-informed healing modalities for survivors/victims of sexual assault, dating/domestic violence and stalking.

Maintains confidential case files so that baseline statistics and trends can be determined and reported. Uses reporting data to improve advocacy efforts and outreach services.
