Generic Scope
Provides direct supervision typically to professionals or skilled technical employees. Functions as advisor to unit and administration. Analyzes and resolves problems, interprets policies (e.g., fiscal management, HR, contracts and grants, resource management in defined areas) and demonstrates solid subject matter knowledge. Exercises judgment within defined procedures and policies to determine appropriate action. Supervises staff to assure accountability and stewardship of department resources (operational, financial, and human) in compliance with departmental goals and objectives.

Custom Scope
Supervises Student Life & Development Specialists and support staff, and administers a component of a Student Affairs or Student Life program. Independently oversees day-to-day operations, and determines goals and performance expectations of subordinates. Makes recommends concerning improvements of program/function to manager.

Department Custom Scope
The Director is responsible for implementing the overall operations, crafting and implementation of the mission and vision for the African Student Programs. The Director manages systems and processes; develops policies; educates the campus community about African Student Programs; serves as a resource and consultant to students, faculty, staff as well as community members to create a meaningful and transformative student experience for all students.

  • Provides professional development plans in alignment with job performance assessment for subordinate staff and addresses performance challenges as well as appreciation as appropriate. Leads staff in the implementation of providing a meaningful professional experience for student assistants. Makes decisions on performance, salary actions, hiring decisions and other human resources related issues of managed staff. Understands the scope of the position and is able to clarify direction and scope for subordinates. Provides vision and clarity for student employees to ensure a meaningful employment experience. Counsels and evaluates employee performance, recommending corrective action, hiring and separation of employees when appropriate. Recommends employees for promotion when warranted.

Solves the most complex and sensitive issues arising in Student Affairs/Life & Development specialization.
  • Key to the development and administration of programs and initiatives that provide faculty, staff, students, alumni, donors and community partners knowledge of issues relating to African-American/ Black student communities. Collaborate with community stakeholders to bridge the relationship between African Student Programs and the surrounding community. Engages alumni and create opportunities for student and alumni connections focused on professional development. Strengthens communication to ensure that the campus community, local community members and alumni are aware of programming and engagement opportunities. Identifies and provides opportunities for faculty to engage in programming and highlight ASP as an academic space. Ensures that there is a robust and collaborative programming model across all Ethnic and Gender Centers to ensure that the complexity of campus climate and equity issues are integrated into programming.

Recommends changes to program policies, processes, and procedures.
  • Oversees the development and implementation of processes and policies within African Student Programs, and advises management with organizational wide development and implementation. Consults university management on policies, practices and appropriate training to ensure the campus serves the needs of African-American, Black and African-Diaspora students, staff, and faculty.

Mediates and guides campus community members through conflict resolution. Navigates campus and local constituencies gracefully using sound judgement, political acumen and discretion. Reacts to controversial situations in a steady and sound manner, de-escalating anxiety in stressful situations.

Responsible for administering the budget for managed function. Develops short and long term organizational goals with adaptability and flexibility in mind. Crafts a vision and plan focused on fundraising and development. Develops a fundraising and development plan to attract alumni and community donors.

Mount exhibitions, present workshops, symposia and other relevant programs for students, staff, faculty and community partners to educate and raise awareness of issues and assets relevant to African-American/ Student communities.
