Recommends solutions to progression and requirement issues. Advice may include not-clearly-defined programs such as independent study programs, interdisciplinary programs, or multiple programs. Works independently under general supervision.

Department Custom Scope
Under the general direction of the College of Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences (CHASS) Student Academic Affairs office and under general departmental supervision, the International Student Advising Specialist provides comprehensive and wide-ranging academic advising and related services to undergraduate international and domestic students in the College of Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences. The position also oversees the Pre-Business student population in the College.

Key Responsibilities

Description % Time
Provides advice and assistance to students on all aspects of their academic experience, including progression and requirement matters for the department/school/college.
  • Work with departmental and college academic advisors to identify unique needs of undergraduate international and domestic students. Develop programming designed to assist international students with transition and other issues.

Advises on complex transfers from other institutions such as those in the midst of advanced degree completion and coursework in other programs.

Evaluates and advises students in petitions for exceptions to departmental/school/college and/or Graduate Division requirements.

Identifies students with GPA or progress problems, advises students, and recommends appropriate courses of action by the department/school/college (e.g., academic probation, dismissal).
  • Work with international students in academic dismissal or other academic separation.

Advises on special eligibility requirements such as Honors programs/fellowships/scholarships.

Confirms that students have met requirements for degree completion when there are no clear precedents or articulations, such as interdisciplinary programs or when transfer work is involved.
  • Foster positive relationships with international students to encourage open communication and a positive experience.

Determines barriers, distractions, and complications affecting a student's academic success, helps students recognize these key non-academic issues, and makes appropriate referrals for additional therapeutic counseling and/or assistance from other units.
  • Develop programming designed to assist Pre-Business students with transition and other issues. Perform intrusive advising for students in academic difficulty and make appropriate referrals.

Advises students on a wide range of course possibilities and/or ways to complete degree requirements that may not be clearly defined.
  • Collaborate with the other undergraduate colleges to assist with students who are in transition between colleges/majors. Track international students¿ progress toward degree by cohort.

Serve as primary undergraduate college liaison to the International Students and Scholar office. Coordinate with CHASS F1RST regarding International Student Learning Community issues. Coordinate with Academic Resource Center for referral purposes and for recommendations of international-student-specific programming.

Maintain accurate database of international students. Develop student data/profiles using COGNOS and other tools as available. Retrieve, query, and analyze data from various internal/external sources to produce meaningful reports regarding the status of international students. Maintain record of advising contacts in Student Profile/Banner. Pursue special projects and produce analytical reports as assigned.

Participate in available professional development opportunities related to international students.

Communicate with Undergraduate Admissions about recruiting efforts. Conduct periodic surveys/focus groups to ascertain the academic advising (and related) needs of international students.

Create programming that better integrates international students into the academic/social life of their discipline. Create programming that connects international students with domestic students in academic/social activities.
