Department Custom Scope
The Bourns College of Engineering Center for Environmental Research and Technology (CE-CERT) is seeking a self-starting, highly motivated Research and Development Engineer Supervisor 2 to join the Emissions and Fuels Research (EFR) group at CE-CERT. The EFR group is a recognized leader in the emissions research of combustion sources (vehicles, trucks, generators, ocean vessels, locomotives, construction, farming and cooking). The incumbent will coordinate EFR's research programs, coordinate laboratory operations with the laboratory director, take a lead role in maintaining a full range of laboratories, and guide and supervise staff and students in good laboratory practices. Incumbent will work directly with the laboratory director, EFR team members and other researchers in the development and refining of experimental test plans involving the laboratories and/or field testing. Incumbent will coordinate with researchers, the laboratory director, staff and students to carry out research studies in the laboratories and in the field. These duties could include logistical coordination, including the coordination of test vehicles and overall laboratory scheduling, coordinating the appropriate staff and students to carry out the research, ensure that the necessary instruments, dynamometers, and other equipment are operational and operating within specifications, and leading efforts to trouble shoot equipment/instrument failures or maintenance as needed. This position will bridge traditional disciplinary boundaries in all forms of mobile and station combustion sources, advanced analytical methods, and systems integration. Incumbent should have experience in carrying out plans for projects that include a wide range of CE-CERT laboratories, and provide recommendations for designs and test setups to Principal Investigators, graduate students/interns, technical staff, and visiting researchers. Specifically, the incumbent should be able to set up laboratory equipment for CE-CERT two chassis dynamometers, two engine dynamometers (heavy-duty and small off-road), install new engines on these engine dynamometers, and oversee operations for PEMS testing and marine field testing, data logging, and our kitchen cooking laboratory. Incumbent will supervise and train technical staff, graduate students, and visiting researchers on good laboratory practices and CE-CERT's standard operation of procedures for all of the above-mentioned laboratories. Incumbent will make recommendations to principal investigators, researchers, students (graduate and undergraduate) on equipment and/or laboratory maintenance while recommending specifications and cost saving measures. Incumbent skills should include an understanding of engine and vehicle technologies, laboratory equipment/instruments and their appropriate operation and maintenance, operating, setting up, and calibrating portable emissions measurement systems (PEMS), and data logging. Incumbent should have experience coordinating and scheduling a wide range of laboratory operations. Incumbent should be familiar with the Code of Federal regulations specifically 40 CFR Part 1066, 1065, 1033, 86.1370, and ISO 8178 and other relevant SAE, ASME and ASTM standards.
