Custom Scope
Utilizing advanced, specialized expertise provides direction and guidance to lower level Student Services professionals in specialized student life and development programs, and resolves the most complex cases/situations; and/or has programmatic responsibility for a discreet complex Student Life & Development function or content area.

Department Custom Scope
The Director for Undocumented Student Programs is responsible for planning, developing, implementing and assessing programs designed to support the academic wellness and campus integration of undocumented students. The Director manages a varied and complex set of co-curricular services and programs intended to advance knowledge of and awareness about UCR's diverse undocumented community and will develop new programming that will address issues of diversity, equity and inclusion. The incumbent works independently to analyze and/or assess the units needs; make recommendations for changes and improvements; independently implements recommended changes; establish operational, programmatic unit policy and procedures. Serves as a subject matter expert pertaining to AB 130,131,540, Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA), and federal immigration law and policy. This position will supervise the program coordinator and ensure that there is quality programming and collaborative partnerships across campus and the surrounding community. The Director advocates for the well-being of students, with a specific focus on undocumented students. The Director will be highly visible on campus as the subject matter expert to students, staff, faculty. This position regularly advises campus management and student groups on a wide range of issues for undocumented student populations including academic achievement, high impact student services, campus climate issues, and the complex and rapidly changing immigration political landscape impacting undocumented students.

  • Refers individuals as necessary to University and community resources. Meets with students and assists them in navigating resources as they resolve emotional, academic, interpersonal, and crisis-level issues related to their status.

Develops and maintains complex or sensitive relationships with external organizations critical to program success. Represents the organizations to UC, the local community, and other relevant audiences.
  • Provides expert level knowledge regarding undocumented students to UC, the local community, and other relevant audiences. Serves as a liaison and partner with UC Immigrant Legal Services and UCOP. Establishes access to resources both on and off campus focused on the needs of undocumented students. Represents this area on a variety of committees to ensure that Undocumented Student Programs area is represented appropriately. Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with faculty, staff and community in support of the student experience

May provide strategic vision and oversight on development of program design and applicability. Measures, assesses, and evaluates programs and staff.
  • Evaluates the needs and interests of undocumented students. Develops, implements, and assesses social, cultural, and educational development programs designed to facilitate the success and retention of undocumented students. Facilitates a positive, constructive environment for undocumented students at the University. Utilizes these evaluations efforts to guide strategic planning and goal setting for the department in alignment with the university and student affairs strategic plan.

Manages a program of providing counseling, guidance and development to student leaders or student government. Oversee(s) a program(s) and service(s) of diverse complexity and scope.

Oversees multiple business services and may supervise business coordinators. Defines criteria for service and assesses risk/benefit, balances financial and cost considerations against the degree of students served. Provides guidance for new services and advises students on development of business plans. Responsible for long range planning and development and new initiatives.
  • Provides guidance to senior leadership focused on undocumented students on a variety of topics such as policy, processes and outreach initiatives. This role will be the subject matter expert.

May supervise clerical and/or student staff.
  • In collaboration with the program director, this role will establish performance guidelines for student and clerical staff and other duties as assigned by the Associate Dean of Students and Dean of Students.

Experience in working with historically underrepresented and underserved communities, including: mediating, managing and resolving conflicts; facilitating group work; and training students and staff. Required
Excellent verbal communication skills both in verbal and written form. Required
Expertise in developing collaborative working relationship with other campus departments with specific attention to Student Affairs programming units and ethnic studies academic departments; knowledge of programs which enhance and integrate the relationship between Academic and Student Affairs. Knowledge in best practices in for undocumented students in: identity and student development, retention, academic achievement, and emerging campus climate issues. Required
Ability to work with Student Affairs Information Systems to develop appropriate assessment tools and data analysis approaches to bridge assessment and practice. Preferred
Ensures that there is a robust and collaborative programming model across all Ethnic and Gender Centers to ensure that the complexity of campus climate and equity issues are integrated into programming. Preferred
Strong working knowledge of free speech issues on college campuses, and ability to support students appropriately as they grapple with issues in this area. Required
