It is the responsibility of the Director of Strength and Conditioning to design, organize, implement, facilitate, oversee and evaluate all facets of the strength and conditioning program to promote the overall success of the student-athlete. This includes the education, healthy physical activity monitoring, athletic competition, teamwork, overall personal growth and supervisory components. This position will work closely with other area of the athletic department including, but not limited to, sports medicine, compliance and team coaches. A successful candidate will also work collaboratively with relevant constituent groups. The director must have a commitment to the philosophy of providing a competitive Division I program that emphasizes integrity and the educational welfare of its student-athletes and also strives for athletic excellence within the University's mission. Regular duties include overall Athletic Development and strength & conditioning of the 17 Varsity teams, implementing year round training programs for the student-athletes on each team based on the physiological needs of that sport, overseeing assistant coaches, interns, and volunteers, and is responsible for the scheduling of training sessions. The Director will work closely with the Sports Medicine staff, as well as the head sport coach to develop injury prevention programs and rehabilitation programs, as well as work in conjunction with the sport coaches to provide information on nutrition, and supplementation to all student-athletes. The incumbent must follow the athletic philosophy consistent with that of the University of California, Riverside Athletic Department and a commitment to diversity in all of its forms. The incumbent must possess strong knowledge of human physiology, be able to demonstrate a wide variety of exercises including Olympic lifting techniques, and basic knowledge of and compliance with all NCAA regulations.

Proposes the strategies, goals and objectives for the sports program on a short and long term basis.
  • In conjunction with the Sports Medicine staff, educate and consult with student-athletes and coaches regarding issues related to strength and conditioning, including, but not limited to, nutrition, supplements, steroids and rest/recovery, that will promote the understanding of sound training principles. Assist selected student-athletes on rehabilitation programs, after appropriate consultation with the Sports Medicine staff. Adjust student athlete workouts based on performance and injuries on a daily basis and keep constant communication with the athletic training room.

Aids the team in recruitment endeavors and enriches team performance.
  • Track and report student athlete attendance in the strength and conditioning program. Discuss reports with the respective Head Coach and the Athletic Trainers. Educate and motivate student athletes, coaches and staff on various athletic performance topics such as: new techniques, team training problems, supplements and new injury trends.

Evaluates student-athletes performance and designs instructional opportunities to improve technical and strategic execution based on sound motor learning and bio-mechanical principles.
  • Design, implement, and monitor safe and effective strength and conditioning programming to improve Physical performance and reduce injuries. Provide supervised training programs to improve physical performance of student athletes through individualized strength training, speed, agility, and injury prevention programs. Develop and implement a fitness assessment protocol to aid coaches and staff to better evaluate student athletes on their level of strength, speed, agility, quickness and conditioning on a year-round basis. Direct Athletic Performance testing for the various teams on a quarterly basis. Compile and analyze testing results to adjust strength & conditioning training. Present all testing results to the respective Head Coach and Athletic Trainer in charge of that team sport.

  • Design, implement and enforce policies and procedures for the use of facilities and equipment, maintenance, risk management, staffing, scheduling, and the recording of player statistics.

Maintain NSCA and/or CSCS certifications and keep abreast of current trends, equipment and philosophies within the areas of strength & conditioning, nutrition, and supplementation.

Recruit and train assistant coaches and interns to assist in the implementation of strength training programs for assigned sports. Develop, implement and supervise the interns program with the UC Riverside Strength Internship Program with established learning objectives, and ongoing guidance and feedback.

Coordinate the maintenance and repair of equipment in the Highlander Strength and Conditioning Center, and complete a quarterly inventory of all strength and conditioning equipment.
