Custom Scope
Using advanced fundraising concepts, plans, organizes, and directs complex large-scale fundraising campaigns which include multiple components. Results have major impact on overall program goals and assignments and are typically at the "major gifts" or "corporate/foundation relations" level, including managing portfolios of donors capable of giving gifts of an agreed upon amount. May oversee work of professional and/or subordinate staff. May attend functions, meetings and serve on internal/external committees as a location representative. Position is expected to raise gift dollar amounts as established at each specialization.

Department Custom Scope
Under the general direction of the Assistant Dean for Development, Bourns College of Engineering (BCOE), the incumbent helps to create and implement extensive programs of engagement between the campus and external constituencies; to encourage major and principal gifts and private philanthropy for BCOE. The incumbent ensures the success of multiple fundraising projects with a focus on corporate philanthropy and initiatives to support student success. Please note: all university development officers sign three-year renewable contracts which include the same employee benefits afforded career employees.

Key Responsibilities

Plans, organizes, and directs large-scale, fundraising campaigns which include multiple components. May serve as an expert or lead development professional in a specific academic discipline.
  • Develops and refines fundraising efforts to increase corporate support for BCOE and to provide new resources for BCOE leadership, faculty, and students in the form of endowed chairs, fellowships and scholarships; research, building, and equipment funds; internship and senior design project support; and unrestricted funds.

Develops and manages dynamic portfolio to identify, qualify, cultivate, solicit and steward prospects for gifts in the agreed upon range. May include corporate and foundation prospects.
  • Ensures that predetermined fundraising goals are met. Writes proposals for solicitation of corporate, individual, and/or foundation prospects with a focus on corporate philanthropy and initiatives to support faculty research and student success. Develops detailed gift opportunities tailored to the interest of potential major donors, consistent with established needs and priorities of the campus. Results have a major impact on the overall goals of the/program.

Identifies, cultivates, solicits and/or stewards major gift prospects and donors.
  • Incumbent will build, grow and manage an individual portfolio of prospective donors capable of giving at the major gift level of $25,000 or more to UCR. Responsible for having a comprehensive understanding of university priorities, and regularly meeting with prospective donors and university supporters (with a focus on face-to-face visits), and working collaboratively with University Advancement colleagues and academic partners to achieve fundraising goals. Responsible for preparing gift proposals, attending events, developing briefing materials, staffing and supervising projects as assigned. Utilizing a high level of professionalism the Director of Development will work closely with institutional leadership such as college deans, department chairs, center directors, directors of developments, alumni relations, university communications, research affairs, and other campus departments.

Evaluates programs using financial feasibility studies and market research, including planning and evaluating annual solicitation programs and making recommendations for improvements.
  • Attends campus, department, and development-related events to advance fundraising objectives. Staffs and supervises projects as assigned. Directs the planning of strategies and tactics for donor solicitation by the annual fund, appropriate volunteers, and academic leaders. Provides consultation and direction to BCOE faculty and staff in planning and marketing specific research and educational programs to funding sources.

Recruits, trains, and supports key volunteers who assist in advancement efforts.
  • Organizes and directs donor solicitation involving key volunteers and academic leaders and participates in major donor solicitations as appropriate. Enlists the involvement of the BCOE faculty, the Dean and other senior UCR administrators in their contact with volunteers and prospective donors.

Proven success at fundraising by developing and implementing strategic plans that incorporate a concise definition of goals, targeted audiences, and strategies in-line with institutional goals, and closing gifts ($25,000+) from individuals, corporations, and foundations, both local and national. Required
Demonstrated success at meeting predetermined goals and objectives through effective program/project planning, organization, execution, and evaluation. Required
Strong sense of ethical conduct that will inspire confidence and motivation with the proven ability to persuade colleagues and prospects. Required
Ability to work effectively with deans and directors, academic and university leaders and volunteers to achieve fundraising goals. Required
Experience with exporting/importing data from or to different software applications; and operating knowledge of internet for data gathering purposes. Required
Experience using Raiser's Edge or other CRM databases. Preferred
Experience supporting capital or comprehensive campaigns in higher education. Preferred
General knowledge of various types of charitable gifts, including in-kind gifts, gifts of securities, planned giving vehicles, and gifts of real property. Preferred
