Department Custom Scope
Under the general direction of the Citrus Containment Director, the incumbent will assist in providing support for research conducted in the Biosafety Level 3 Plant (BSL-3P) containment facility including but not limited to: support and coordination for day-to-day operations, laboratory security, management of space, coordination with researchers, USDA-APHIS compliance, uniform safety and training programs. Under the direction of the Citrus Containment Director, the incumbent may collaborate with other campus units as needed, may assist by providing knowledge and skills to researchers, laboratory staff, and students who work with the BSL-3 pathogens and arthropods in the biocontainment research laboratory and greenhouses.

Key Responsibilities

Description % Time
Develops, implements, and monitors environmental and safety programs, systems, procedures, and training in one or more of the following fields: industrial hygiene, environmental health, pest control, occupational safety, ergonomics, laboratory safety, biosafety, controlled substances, environmental protection, fire safety, radiation safety, hazardous materials control and hazardous waste management (may include shipping).
  • Performs weekly maintenance on the Effluent Decontamination System (EDS); validates systems on regular intervals (EDS and autoclaves); coordinates with service technicians to perform tests and repairs, and follows up to ensure completion. Coordinates with Facility Services, Communication Services or other campus units for operational and other business needs. Will change and record pest traps throughout the facility and provide relevant documentation.

  • Monitors compliance under the direction of the Citrus Containment Director. Assists in ensuring personnel follow all protocols. Assists in maintaining and enforcing existing Standard Operating Procedures and other protocols for containment, equipment, laboratory, greenhouses, etc. May develop, revise and/or update existing protocols as needed to ensure compliance with all federal, state, and local agencies, such as the Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC).

Inspects, investigates incidents and complaints, and recommends corrective action as needed.
  • Responds to emergency situations as required to ensure all appropriate resources and emergency personnel are notified and/or deployed. Will be on-call and respond appropriately to facility emergencies when summoned, including evening, nights, and weekends.

  • May assist in providing technical expertise and regulatory guidance to BSL-3 researchers and laboratory staff regarding BSL-3 projects. Assists in the instruction and oversight of the activities of all researchers utilizing the facility. Coordinates with the facility users, their research approaches and specific methodologies to assist in the development of protocols and procedures.

Within specific field maintains knowledge/expertise on existing/proposed changes in all regulations; interprets and applies relevant laws, regulations, codes and standards, including making recommendations for work environment changes based on interpretations and principles of professional practices.
  • When directed by the Citrus Containment Director, assists in maintaining facility compliance with UC, state, federal, health and safety regulations including, but not limited to maintaining systems and records. Advises and implements current regulations, novel methods, or advancements in technology. Inspects and investigates incidents and complaints. Recommends corrective action as needed under the supervision of the Citrus Containment Director.

Keeps research areas well-stocked and organized, and provides technical assistance when needed. Ensure that the facilities are kept clean, including common areas, labs, greenhouses, and grounds. For restricted access areas, duties include regular cleaning, using common household and commercial items for bathrooms, labs, or administrative areas, taking out trash, laundry, vacuuming, and watering and maintaining plants in the greenhouses.

Acts as an additional contact and safety coordinator for the facilities. Assists in the decontamination of research areas between projects and/or when necessary, disposing and autoclaving lab, greenhouse, and growth chamber waste.

Re-stocks First Aid Kits and Spill Kits, Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), tests Eye Washes and Safety Showers and records for documentation in collaboration with Facility Services, AED and CPR certified annually.

Routinely involved with research projects using arthropods, nematodes, phytopathogenic microbes, animals, and transgenic organisms. Assists with the handling and introduction of material destined for the facility, ensuring compliance with state and federal regulations involving permitting, importation, propagation, shipment, and release of said material. Assists in the oversight of processing of all incoming foreign and interstate shipments, disposes of infectious biological waste and unwanted living organisms in compliance with state and federal regulations. May assist with insect colonies and growth management.

Ability to perform all tasks related to greenhouse and laboratory safety and containment issues to include, but not limited to, following safe working practices, train users in safe operating procedures, strong knowledge of laws, regulations, and requirements of EH&S, Riverside County, California Department of Food and Agriculture, United States Department of Agriculture, Department of Pesticide Regulation, etc. and working within regulatory guidelines for greenhouse/laboratory safety regulations, reporting requirements, record keeping, MSDS practices, and disposal of chemicals. Ability to maintain detailed records for research, budget analysis, chemical/fertilizer usage and inventories, greenhouse space allocation, and labor charges. Knowledge of purchasing procedures to maintain records of purchases and to store and organize in appropriate locations. Preferred
