Custom Scope
Utilizing a theoretical understanding of career development, advises students/alumni on a full range of career processes, including individual or group advising/coaching, career planning, setting career goals, decision making, and improving job search competencies. Provides a holistic approach to student/alumni career counseling, modifies workshops and presentations as necessary; OR maintains relationships with potential employers, school admissions representatives, and other organizations to establish contacts to meet the career needs of students. Performs independently, but may receive guidance in developing new career advising/coaching services and Counsels undergraduate and graduate students and alumni on career options and opportunities, including customized services for specific populations.

Department Custom Scope
The Residency Development Specialist will advise medical students on a full range of residency exploration and development plans for the residency application process and transition to residency, including group/individual advising, residency application planning, workshops, mock sessions, and tools to support specialty specific residency application services. Creates and modifies workshops and presentations as necessary to cater to the specific student populations. Trains and maintains relationships with faculty advisors and mentors for residency development planning. Develops new residency advising/coaching services and counsels medical students and alumni on residency pathways and opportunities. Works in tandem with the Director of Academic Success to track student progress to maximize MATCH succes. Collaborates with staff/faculty across campus for workshop and development opportunities geared toward residency preparation. Serves as the medical school liaison between the AAMC and NRMP as the two key portal/resource sites for residency processing. Works with the Student Affairs team to help organize and carry out major events and activities such as Residency Match, SOAP, Recruitment Day, Orientation Week, graduation ceremonies and various Medical Student Life events. Provides staff support for Careers in Medicine initiatives.

Helps clients identify their interests, values, skills, and personalities, and understand how these factors relate to academic/career satisfaction and choices.
  • Oversees the full scope of residency planning for the UCR School of Medicine, including advising medical students on various residency application service platforms (ERAS,.SFMATCH, MODS, AUA, MIDUS etc.), guidance and tools for residency program specialty selection, and informational workshops and resources to ensure appropriate preparation for a residency match. Provides advice to prospective, new and continuing medical students on residency program requirements and student support services. Counsels students and designated significant others in person, telephone, email or mail. Interprets and communicates policies, procedures and guidelines. Monitors compliance; makes referrals to Director or appropriate Deans as needed.

Uses standard quantitative and qualitative assessments to help clients assess career goals.
  • Works closely with the Associate Dean(s) of Student Affairs with the preparation of the Medical Student Performance Evaluation (MSPE). Assists with collecting the evaluation data, ensuring its accuracy, writing drafts and reviewing the content for final revision of the documents prior to the October 1 national release deadline. Assists with implementing a system that can be replicated in future years to increase efficiency and decrease the time required in compiling multiple MSPE documents. Develops and maintains system to accurately track and report student academic success as it relates to the residency process. Maintains accurate student files and database of student formative and summative evaluations and performance summaries. Collects and maintains student record information such as Match data and specialty reports for internal and external dissemination. Compiles and interprets statistical data and prepares reports on student retention, performance, attrition, and assists with AAMC graduation survey collection. Organizes and maintains up-to-date and accurate medical student portfolios by working with the education team as well as clerkship faculty and administration in preparing for specialty careers and alternative options. Tracks post- residency process where students matched, applied and re-located. Tracks the success of advising programs and workshops. Evaluates student satisfaction of programming and advising programs. Makes improvements based on evaluative results.

Counsels undergraduate and graduate students and alumni on career options and opportunities, including customized services for specific populations.
  • Assists medical students with accurately assessing their competitiveness for their selected specialties locally, regionally and nationally using established metrics. Supports students with creating parallel plans, as needed, and with planning for alternate career plans. Compiles UCR School of Medicine specific data to help inform future cohorts. Coordinates regular, military, early and couples matches. Creates, coordinates and implements a process for obtaining specialized letters or letters of recommendation from chairs of each department for the MATCH. Provides information to assist students with preparing for a parallel plan for their specialty choice. Provides support for the Supplemental Offer and Acceptance Program (SOAP) for unmatched students. Provides continued support for alumni re-entering the Match process and/or pursuing fellowship pathways.
