Department Custom Scope
The Per Diem Dentist is a member of the UCR Student Health Services (SHS) Team. This is a per diem (hourly) appointment. In accordance with ADA standards, provide full, complete dental care and services to UCR students, including but not limited to the diagnosing, explaining, and implementing of treatment options and will actively engage in dental education. This recruitment will be for two per diem positions up to 40% appointment. This is a one year per diem position, with the possibility of extension based on available funding at the time.

Restorative Procedures: Perform restorative procedures with assorted dental materials, including but not limited to fillings and crowns in an aesthetic manner.

Examinations and Treatments: Evaluate the current health and condition of their patient's teeth to determine diagnosis of dental condition. Perform routine oral and X-ray examinations of teeth, gums, and supporting structures. Complete treatment of affected gums, decayed and fractured teeth. Perform dental extractions, uncomplicated surgeries and routine root canal procedures. Provide emergency treatment for pain, infection, and discomfort.

Dental Education: Communicate and instruct patients in appropriate oral hygiene and maintenance/prevention of dental problems and keeping teeth and mouth as healthy as possible.

Indirect Patient Care: Prepare and keep clinical electronic records of all patients. Provide recommendations regarding performance of dental assistants. Participate in Dental Clinic staff meetings. Provide auxiliary support whenever needed, e.g., taking X-rays, helping to seat patients, clean the operatory rooms, and sterilization of instruments. Provide Peer Review every quarter.

Referrals: Refer non-routine extractions and root canals to specialist. Refer for follow up care not provided in clinic. Refer patients for orthodontic and TMJ needs.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Knowledge/Skill/Ability Requirement
Current unrestricted License to practice dentistry in the State of California. Strong verbal and in written communication skills. Commitment to quality patient care, excellent customer service, and to patient education regarding dental health. Required
Ability to diagnose routine and special dental needs of patients seen and treated in Student Health Services. Required
Thorough knowledge associated with conducting examinations, prescribing and administering treatments, and advising patients. Ability to develop and implement treatment plans or referrals for special dental treatments/interventions. Required
Must be skilled in use of dental instruments, air hand pieces, and dental filing and cementing materials for teeth restoration. Must be skilled in the use of cosmetic procedures, such as dental whitening. Ability to administer oral anesthesia. Required
Ability to obtain and/or maintain knowledge of new and developing materials by continuing education and techniques as required by state law and/or accrediting bodies. Required
Knowledge and ability to perform a wide range of clinical skills to provide routine dental treatments in the maintenance, restoration and prevention of dental disease. Required
Ability to communicate with both patients and clinical staff members. Must be able to work in a collaborative manner. Must be able to influence others. Required
Must be computer literate. Requires knowledge of electronic/dental records systems. Required
Ability to make appropriate judgement of when to refer patients to dental specialist(s) for non-routine or difficult procedures that would require specialized dental care, treatments, or intervention. Required
Manual dexterity to safely handle and manipulate all required tools in order to perform job functions. Required
Ability to sit, stand, bend, and stoop frequently throughout each shift. Preferred
