Custom Scope
Responsible for all activities associated with multiple/comprehensive technical aspects of theater productions, including procedures and administering/monitoring budgetary expenditures consistent with budgetary allocations, and training of staff/students. May be responsible for maintenance of theater venues, shops, and storage, including facilities and stage equipment, tools and materials, and establishing and ensuring implementation of operational procedures for all users within the facilities.

Plan and coordinate technical aspects of theatrical productions and film/television projects for the Department of Theatre, Film, and Digital Production; coordinate activities associated with lighting, sound, video, and cameras; ensure the timely installation of lighting, sound, video, film, and related equipment; directly supervise and assign technical personnel to various phases of production; review and evaluate students' work for grading or advancement; establish lab training procedures to ensure development and safety of students and staff; design the sound/music for selected productions; oversee the management of the Film Equipment Room to ensure the timely check-in/out of all film equipment for classes and productions.

Key Responsibilities

Description % Time
Constructs and installs theatrical production elements in multiple production areas (lights, sound, video, costumes, hair/make-up, properties, scenery, scenic treatment, etc.) from design and design specification provided by theatrical designers.
  • Plans, supervises, and assumes general responsibility for the load-in and rigging of lighting, sound, and video in the theatre and all electrical equipment for film production. Sets up and rigs individual pieces of lighting, sound, video, and film equipment according to plans. Coordinates the staff and equipment resources necessary to service the lighting, sound, video, and electrical requirements for all productions and events.

Ensures professional and safe general shop conditions and operations, including fulfilling reporting and record-keeping requirements and all applicable rules/regulations including federal, state, OSHA and CalOSHA guidelines and regulations.
  • Repairs and maintains lighting, sound, video, and film equipment.

Attends technical/dress rehearsals and consults with directors/designers regarding notes, changes, and/or additions.
  • In consultation with the director and other designers, designs the sound/music for selected productions.

Establishes procedures and trains users in safe, proper practices of theatrical construction and installation and in safe use, proper handling, and maintenance of all machinery, power and hand tools, and other shop and theater equipment, power and hand tools, and other shop and theater equipment.
  • Ensures the health and safety of rehearsal and performance spaces and film shoot locations, and resolves any issues surrounding the health and safety of students in rehearsals during rehearsals, technical rehearsals, dress rehearsals, performances, and film shoots. Assists in the coordination of safety and fire control in the theatres, film studios, and in the shops.

Trains students in laboratory setting associated with theatrical production; may evaluate students in laboratory work.
  • Supervises and trains student assistants, running crews, and film production crews for lighting, sound, video, and film for all theatrical and film productions. Is present at designated rehearsals, technical rehearsals, dress rehearsals, performances, and film shoots as a staff supervisor for student crews.

Administers budgets, ensuring that expenditures are within agreed upon budgetary limits.
  • Estimates the cost of materials and labor for installing and setting up lighting, sound, video, camera, and electrical equipment. Orders all materials and supplies related to lighting, sound, video, and electrical elements.

Consults with/suggests changes to designers and directors regarding efficiency or economy of construction, installation, and operation of theatrical production elements.
