Department Custom Scope
The Triage Clinician provides services designed to assist students in optimizing their educational experience, minimizing the impact of illness, injury and emotional distress on students' academic careers by coordinating mental health care through a network of campus and community resources. The Triage Clinician provides mental health screening and triage in a high-volume, fast-paced environment, and possesses excellent clinical skills in assessment, triage, crisis intervention and case management. Familiarity with the full range of mental disorders is essential, including safety concerns and indications for hospitalization. In addition, the Triage Clinician may conduct a weekly coping skills group, may provide a limited amount of short-term psychotherapy, conduct campus outreach activities, and other duties as assigned. The Triage Clinician must be able to work collaboratively as part of a larger team and communicate effectively with other CAPS clinicians, staff and the extended University community. The CAPS department prioritizes working with students from marginalized communities including Black/African American, Latinx, Undocumented, Indigenous/First Nations, Asian American/Pacific Islander, Multi-racial, and other students of color. The Triage Clinician will demonstrate commitment to diversity and inclusion with a deep commitment to supporting under represented groups in our community.

Key Responsibilities

Description % Time
Provides counseling, clinical consultation and/or psychotherapy to clients. Develops and communicates treatment plans, provides crisis intervention/management and emergency services as required.
  • Provides mental health screenings and triages in a high-volume, fast-paced environment. Provides triage, counseling, clinical consultation, and/or psychotherapy utilizing knowledge of intersectionality, multiculturalism, and of diversity, equity and inclusion and their impact on psychological service delivery in a university setting to provide direct clinical care. Provides overall assessments, triages, crisis walk-in services, intervention and case management. May conduct weekly coping skills group and occasionally provides short-term psychotherapy, and conducts campus outreach activities. Supports and evaluates students requiring mental health hospitalization and follow-up.

Assesses clients and determines appropriate therapeutic approach in consultation with other behavioral health professionals as appropriate.
  • Provides time-limited individual, couple, and group therapy services for registered UCR students experiencing complex, serious psychological disturbances and development concerns. Refer clients to specialty psychological/psychiatric and other mental health-related services on and off campus.

Support and evaluation for students requiring mental health hospitalization and follow-up. Some possible options for redistribution in other key responsibility template headers as follows: Assesses clients and determines appropriate therapeutic approach in consultation with other behavioral health professionals as appropriate.

Supports crisis walk-in services supporting student and UC Riverside community in consultation and triage.; Participates in, or leads, training sessions and workshops to enhance treatment skills.

Participates in ongoing professional development and training of clinical staff.; Arranges for therapeutic interventions for clients with serious disturbance problems.

Clinical Documentation and Case Management: Completes accurate and concise clinical documentation for all clinical contacts in compliance with ethical and professional standards and in compliance with Quality Assurance policies. In compliance with CAPS policies and procedures, manages caseload appropriately.

Special Requirements & Conditions
Special Condition Requirement
Ongoing mantenance of valid licensure in a behavioral health displine in California, successful completion and maintenance of valid credentialing & privileging process pursuant to UC systemwide requirements. Required
Out of State licensed behavioral health counselors are required to acquire California licensure within 180 days from either submitting the application or beginning California residency, whichever occurs first. Required
Expectation of availability after hours or on weekends to serve the occasional emergent needs of students and campus challenges/crises. Required
Ability to participate in after-hours on-call rotation and other after-hours campus activities. Required
